Kingsport, TN – The University of the Cumberlands men's swimming & diving team set a conference record 958 points to capture their sixth consecutive Mid-South Conference Swimming & Diving Championship, Saturday night at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. The Patriots closed out the meet earning four individual wins on the final day of competition.
Jokubas Jankauskas earned MSC Swimmer of the Year Honors, making it the third straight year that a Patriots earned this honor. For the fourth straight year, UC earned MSC Freshman of the Year honors as
Agustin Rasche garnered this award.
Jankauskas won the 200 back with a winning time of 1:48.57 to clinch the swimmer of the year honors. The sophomore won all three of his individual events and played a key role on the Cumberlands relays throughout the championship.
Rasche capped off his first conference championship by winning the 100 free, touching the wall in 45.16. The Berlin, Germany native earned two wins and runner-up finish on the week to garner the Freshman of the Year honors.
Five other Patriots scored in the 100 free, led by a runner-up finish from Joan Cortadellas Llubera with a time of 45.58.
Thomas Holzkamm (45.95), edged out Mateus Cruz (46.18) for fifth place, while
Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira went 46.71 to place eighth.
Andres Caicedo won the consolation final with a time of 46.93.
Dorian Bachlaj tallied his second win and second meet record when we clocked an "A" cut time of 1:59.73 in the 200 breast. That is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Mikolaj Kala was runner-up with a time of 2:04.33, while Peyton Beter and Marcos del Vado Sanz went 2:06.81 and 2:08.09, respectively.
Will Gilbert opened finals with a podium finish in the 1650 free. The sophomore clocked a NAIA provisional cut time of 16:28.70, which ranks 10
th in the NAIA to place third.
Ruthiik Satti notched his second runner-up finish of the meet as he went 1:50.86 in the 200 back.
Creed Farthing touched the wall in 1:53.04 to place fourth.
Marcelo Rojas notched a runner-up finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.74. That is the tenth fastest time in the NAIA this season.
In the final event of the meet, the 400 free relay, Cruz, Rasche, Jankauskas, and Gonzalez de Oliveira teamed up for a winning time of 3:30.38.
Overall, Cumberlands had 27 MSC First Team All-Conference selections, 12 Second Team All-Conference honorees, and five swimmers earn MSC Third Team All-Conference honors.
UC will now set their sights on the NAIA National Championships March 6-9 in Columbus, GA.
