Kingsport, TN – The University of the Cumberlands women's swimming & diving team posted three wins and had eight podium finishes during finals as the Patriots captured their 12
th straight Mid-South Conference Swimming & Diving Championship, Saturday night at the Kingsport Aquatic Center. UC tallied 900 points over the three day meet, while
Alicja Sedlak was named the MSC Freshman of the Year.
Sedlak becomes the fifth Patriot in program history to garner MSC Freshman of the Year honors. The Torun, Poland native recorded her second individual win of the championship when she took top honors in the 200 breast. Sedlak split a 37.39 in the final leg of the event to edge out the field for the win with a time of 2:24.98.
Isabella Cooksey collected her second individual podium finish placing third in the event with a time of 2:25.64, while
Ashley Schoenlein finished fourth (2:26.70). Kate Harris went 2:28.13 to place seventh.
UC opened finals with a pair of Patriots earning podium finishes in the 1650 free.
Michelle Weiss notched her third individual all-conference honor as she clocked a 17:53.10 to finish runner-up. That time ranks seventh in the NAIA this season.
Aldara Gonzalez Riano went 18:17.92 to earn the bronze medal.
Anastasiia Shatalova captured the MSC 100 free title for the first time as a Patriot after finishing runner-up the past three years. Shatalova clocked a 52.12, which is the fourth fastest time in the NAIA, to earn the title.
Valentina Zapata Ceballos was runner-up with a time of 52.39, while
Neyali Matos went 53.39 to finish fifth.
Celin Ullern (55.73) and Maggie Mayer (57.16) also scored in the event.
A pair of Patriots notched top-five finishes in the 200 back.
Romina Itzkovich Sacco clocked a 2:04.22 to finish runner-up in the event and currently holds the fifth fastest time in the NAIA.
Madeline Barbee finished fourth in the event clocking a 2:10.09.
Judit Garreta Yuste (2:15.33) and
Filippa Malmstrom (2:18.85) placed fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 200 fly. Gonzalez Riano won the consolation final with a time of 2:22.56.
In the final event of the championship, the 400 free relay, Matos, Itzkovich Sacco, Zapata Ceballos, and Shatalova, broke the meet record en route to the win. The quartet touched the wall in 3:30.91, which is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season.
UC will now set their sights on the NAIA National Championships March 6-9 in Columbus, GA.
