Patriots Battle Throughout But Fall in Overtime

Williamsburg, KY – The top-ranked Patriots women's lacrosse faced second-ranked Reinhardt in a game that featured four lead changes and five ties, however it was the Eagles who earned the 10-9 win in overtime Thursday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  Cumberlands moves to 10-1 on the year and 0-1 in AAC play.

Mia Bosah made ten saves, including six in the third quarter, in the game.  UC utilized a balanced attack as Anna Lobbezoo, Emma Rittman, and Aleyah Belton finished with a pair of goals each, while Rittman and Lobbezoo combined for 10 draw controls and five ground balls. Koral Hadac added four draw controls and a goal.

Cumberlands jumped out to an early lead as Mia Rask found Terpstra cutting towards the cage for a goal two minutes into the first quarter.  Hadac won the draw control and on the next possession Rittman put a well-placed shot into the cage to extend the lead to 2-0 with 11:26 remaining.  Reinhardt netted three unanswered goals, in a four-minute span, to take the 3-2 advantage.  The two teams traded possession until Belton evened the game with an unassisted goal at the 2:02 mark.  Rittman won the next draw control and Ashlee Baker converted a goal 40 seconds later to put UC in front 4-3 with 1:22 left.  Reinhardt added a late goal to even the score at 4-4 after the opening period.

Bosah made a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the second quarter to keep the game tied.  Midway through the quarter Terpstra found a cutting Lobbezoo for a man-up goal putting Cumberlands in front 5-4.  The Eagles went on a three-goal run to retake the lead at 7-5.  In the closing seconds of the half, Baker forced a turnover as Hadac led the Patriots transition taking it all the way to the cage for her third goal of the season cutting the deficit to 7-6.

Reinhardt added a goal three minutes into the third quarter, before Bosah made three saves, in a one-minute span, to keep the score 8-6 with 4:50 remaining.  Morgan Tate scooped the ground ball to give the Patriots the possession. As the shot clock was winding down, Rittman rolled from behind the creased and fired a shot into the upper corner of the cage to make it 8-7.  Bosah added two more saves as Reinhardt took a 9-7 edge into the fourth quarter.

Both teams traded possession to open the fourth quarter as Belton converted a free position goal to cut the deficit to 9-8 with 11:22 remaining.  The score remained that way until the 5:30 mark when Lobbezoo put a well-placed shot into the cage to tie the game at 9-9.  Both teams had opportunities to take the lead, however, Bosah saved an Anna-Marie Gazzo free-position attempt, while Rittman's shot was saved forcing overtime.

Reinhardt won the opening draw control of overtime and Jill Mello found Shelby O'Neil for the game-winning goal 34 seconds into the period for the 10-9 final.
The Patriots return to the field Saturday, March 23, when they host Oberlin.  Game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
