Williamsburg, KY – The fourth-ranked Patriots (30-4, 6-0) completed the sweep of Lindsey Wilson (13-18, 1-7), taking both games of the twin bill at 6-3 and 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. UC's hitters combined for 15 hits with one homer across the two games. On the mound, the pitching staff compiled 17 strikeouts.
No. 4 Cumberlands Battles from Behind to Win over Blue Raiders, 6-3
Cesar Avila took the start on the mound and was credited with his sixth win of the season after throwing six strikeouts across 6.1 innings. He went three up, three down in two innings.
Chipper Korbacher entered to pitch 0.2 innings and secured his fifth save, along with UC's lead, with two groundouts.
At the plate, lead-off batter,
Christian Thompson batted 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Caden Petrey also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double. Going 1-for-1,
Alec Gonzalez ended the game with one RBI and one walk.
The Blue Raiders were first on the board, scoring all three of their runs in the top of the third, 3-0. Lindsey Wilson plated one on an RBI single and added two with a home run to left.
UC responded later in the bottom of the fourth, trimming the deficit to 3-1. With two outs,
Ben Snapp was issued a walk. After Snapp stole second,
Alec Gonzalez sent him home with a single to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Patriots plated one run to trail 3-2. Charlie Muñiz reached base on a fielder's choice and was substituted for pinch runner,
Jay Flynn. The next batter,
Evan St. Claire laid a double down the left line, sending Flynn home.
Cumberlands tied the game and jumped into the final 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth frame.
Johnboy Rittenhouse led off with a double to left and scored on a double from
Caden Petrey. To load the bases, Snapp was issued a walk and Gonzalez was hit by a pitch.
Jose Valentin entered to pinch hit and sent a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Petrey to score.
Christian Thompson singled to plate one more run, and Muñiz sent the last Patriot run across the plate with a sacrifice fly.
No. 4 Cumberlands Slides Past Lindsey Wilson, 4-1
On the mound,
Cooper Morgan took his first start of the season and pitched three full innings, with three strikeouts and two allowed hits. He was relieved by
Dustin Sprong who moves to 2-2 after earning credit for the win. Sprong threw five strikeouts across two innings and gave up one hit.
Kailen Hamson pitched for 2.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts and one allowed hit.
Caleb Plummer entered in relief for 1.1 innings, throwing one strikeout and allowing one run off two hits.
Chipper Korbacher closed out for the Patriots and collected his sixth save after throwing the final out.
Evan St. Claire batted 1-for-3 with a three-run homer and two runs scored. Also hitting 1-for-3,
Johnboy Rittenhouse finished with one RBI.
Clay Shelton went 3-for-4 at the plate, recording three singles.
UC scored early, in the bottom of the first inning, to lead 1-0.
Evan St. Claire was hit by a pitch to reach base, advanced to second on a double play, and scored on a single hit by
Johnboy Rittenhouse.
After two scoreless innings, the Patriots extended their lead to 4-0 on a three-run homer from St. Claire.
Alec Gonzalez was issued a lead-off walk and advanced on a
Clay Shelton single.
Christian Thompson singled to reach and Gonzalez was picked off at third. With a shot to right field, St. Claire sent all the base runners to the plate.
Lindsey Wilson scored late in the top of the ninth, with a solo home run, for a final score of 4-1.
The #4 Patriots will face #21 Tennessee Wesleyan for the second time this season, in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday April 2
nd, beginning at 5 p.m. at Doyle Buhl Stadium.
