Campbellsville, KY – Fourth-ranked UC Baseball (31-4, 7-0) narrowly defeated Mid-South opponent Campbellsville (15-12, 2-5), 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at HIG Baseball Field. The batters collected nine hits and the pitching staff totaled 15 strikeouts.
The starting pitcher,
Knicko Billings marked five strikeouts across three innings.
Cooper Morgan entered in relief for 4.1 innings and improved to 4-0 on the season, after throwing seven strikeouts. Earning his seventh save of the season,
Chipper Korbacher went for 1.2 innings and struck out three batters.
At the plate,
Max Harper hit 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, and two issued walks. Batting 2-for-5,
Evan St. Claire tallied a double and a single for three RBIs.
Christian Thompson went 2-for-4, with a double and a single, along with two RBIs.
The Tigers were first on the board, putting up three runs off two hits to lead 3-0, in the bottom of the second.
The Patriots responded with four runs in the top of the third. With two outs,
Christian Thompson reached first on an error by the Campbellsville third baseman. The next batter, Charlie Muniz was issued a walk, and substituted for pinch runner
Jay Flynn.
Evan St. Claire doubled to left, plating both base runners. For his twelfth home run of the season,
Max Harper sent a long ball over the left field to take a 4-3 lead.
Campbellsville tacked on four runs in the bottom of the same frame, to reclaim a 7-4 lead.
In the top of four, UC boasted another four-run inning to shift into an 8-7 lead.
Caden Petrey was walked to start the inning off, and was followed by
Ben Snapp, who singled through the left side. The runners advanced on double hit by
Alec Gonzalez and Petrey scored.
Trent Prokes was issued a walk and with a double down the right line, Thompson sent two base runners across the plate. Prokes went home on a ground out to score the final run of the inning.
Cumberlands led 9-7 in the top of the fifth inning, after Gonzalez doubled to reach base and went home on a single hit by Prokes.
Max Harper sent a shot over the left field fence, his second homer of the day, to extend UC's lead to 10-7 in the top of the eighth frame.
In the bottom of eight, the Tigers answered with a two-run home run to shorten the gap to a final score of 10-9.
#4 Cumberlands will close out the series against Campbellsville with a twin bill beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday April 6
th at HIG Baseball Field.
