Williamsburg, KY – The fifth-ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team rallied in the second quarter, however, fell to third-ranked Webber 15-7 Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. The Patriots move to 11-2 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.
Maalek Wilson led the way with a hat trick, while
Will Rogers tallied two goals and an assist.
Gabe Schwaiger forced four caused turnovers and scooped five ground balls as
Michael Toohey finished with 11 saves in the game.
Cumberlands came out strong tallying four caused turnovers in the first five minutes of action. The Patriots took advantage of a Webber penalty as
Nick Kava connected with
Dom Lulow for a goal to make it 1-0 with 8:51 remaining. The Warriors scored twice before Rogers put a well-placed shot into the corner of the cage to tie the score at 2-2 with 5:33 left. Webber added three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead after the opening period.
The Warriors extend their lead to 7-2 before the Patriots started to mount a comeback.
Michael Adams won a pair of faceoffs, while Wilson netted three consecutive goals in a two-minute span to cut the deficit to 7-5 with 2:53 left. Rogers added a late man-up goal as Webber took an 8-6 lead into half.
UC looked to inch closer as
Carter Barrett fired a shot towards the cage in the opening minute of the third quarter, but it sailed wide. Webber outscored the Patriots 7-1 in the second half, including 4-0 in the fourth quarter for the 15-7 final. Toohey made four of his 11 saves in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots return to the field Saturday, April 6, when they travel to Waleska, GA to face top-ranked Reinhardt. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
