Patriots Surge Past #9 Ravens Behind Nine Goal Second Quarter

Williamsburg, KY – The fifth-ranked UC women's lacrosse team netted nine second quarter goals en route to a 19-9 win over ninth-ranked Benedictine Monday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  The win was the Patriots fifth win over a team that was ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

Emma Rittman led the way with six goals, eight points and 14 draw controls.  The 14 draw controls are third most in program history, while she notched a season-high in goals and points.  Anna Lobbezoo added three goals and three assists, while Mia Rask finished with a hat trick.  Koral Hadac scooped seven draw controls as Reese Kincaid notched three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Hannah Yates made four saves in the win.

Rittman won each of the first three draw controls with the offensive possession resulting in goals from three different players.  A minute later Hadac forced a turnover and in the transition Morgan Terpstra tallied an unassisted goal to make it 4-0.  The Ravens scored to get on the board before Aleyah Belton converted a free position goal to make it 5-1 midway through the quarter.  Benedictine tacked on a pair of goals to cut the lead to 5-3.

Cumberlands took control of the game in the second quart as Marisa Helsten connected with Rittman for a goal as Rittman and Lobbezzo each scored twice to extend the lead to 9-3 with 8:09 remaining.  The sophomore Rittman added two more goals and an assist before Rask and Morgan Tate connected with the back of the cage for the 14-4 lead.  The Ravens looked for a late goal, however, Yates stopped a free position shot to keep the score 14-4 at the break.

Rask opened the third quarter with a goal and an assist to make it 16-4 in favor of UC.  Two minutes later Lobbezoo converted a free position shot for the man-up goal to make it 17-4.  Benedictine added three straight goals before Terpstra notched a goal and an assist to extend the lead to 19-7.  Cumberlands held on the 19-9 final.

The Patriots will return to the field Thursday, March 7, when they host Albion College.  First draw is set for 12 p.m.
