Williamsburg, KY – The third-ranked Cumberlands women's lacrosse team closed out the game on a 14-1 scoring run to defeat Albion 54-3 Thursday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Patriots improve to 6-0 on the year, while the Britons move to 3-2.
Marisa Helsten led the way with four goals and six points in the game, while
Mia Rask notched two goals and a pair of assists.
Emma Rittman chipped in four points, seven draw controls and a pair of ground balls.
Morgan Tate scooped four draw controls, three ground balls, and tallied three points.
Koral Hadac notched a team-best six ground balls in the win.
Hannah Yates recorded a career-high eight saves to go along with five ground balls.
Patriots struck first as
Anna Lobbezoo converted a free position to make it 1-0. Albion looked to even the score, however,
Hannah Yates made a save at point blank range to keep the Patriots in front.
Reese Kincaid notched a caused turnover as Yates made a pair of saves keeping the score tied 1-1 after the first quarter.
Albion took a 2-1 advantage two minutes into the second quarter, however, UC picked up their effort on both ends of the field from that point. Yates added a save before
Mia Rask connected with
Aleyah Belton for a goal evening the score at 2-2. Two minutes later,
Morgan Terpstra netted an unassisted goal to put UC in front 3-2 midway through the period. Yates kept the Britons at-bay before
Morgan Tate connected with
Marisa Helsten for a transition goal as UC took a 4-2 lead into the break.
Rittman scooped the first two draw controls of the third period as Lobbezzo and Rittman both found the back of the cage to make it 6-2, one minute into the quarter. Cumberlands defense continued their strong effort as Tate forced a pair of turnovers before UC added a pair of goals, including a man-up goal from
Koral Hadac to extend the lead to 8-2. Rittman dished out a pair of assists as part of 3-1 run as Tate took the ball coast-to-coast for an unassisted man-down goal to close out the quarter with a 12-3 advantage.
Helsten opened the fourth quarter with two assists and a goal to give Cumberlands a 15-3 lead with 6:26 remaining. The Patriots defense forced multiple turnovers as
Mia Bosah recorded a save in the closing seconds for the 15-3 final.
Cumberlands will return to the field Sunday, March 10, when they host tenth-ranked Indiana Tech. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
