Williamsburg, KY – A trio of Patriots reach career milestones as the top-ranked Cumberlands women's lacrosse team defeated Ottawa 22-2 Monday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, UC improves to 14-1 overall on the season.
Emma Rittman led the way with three goals, five assists, 16 draw controls, and four caused turnovers. The sophomore broke both the single season (171) and career (331) draw controls records surpassing Trinity Brown and Emily Heim's previous records of 167 and 322, respectively.
Marisa Helsten notched five goals and seven points to clip 100 career points, while
Koral Hadac scooped six ground balls and tallied three caused turnovers as the sophomore went over 100 ground balls for her career.
Offensively,
Anna Lobbezoo and
Mia Rask netted four goals apiece, while
Morgan Terpstra dished out four assists as part of a six point performance.
Hannah Yates and
Mia Bosah combined for four saves in the win as
Ashlee Baker tallied a career-high six caused turnovers in the game.
Rittman won the opening draw control and found Helsten for a goal ten seconds into the contest. A couple minutes later, Helsten scooped a ground ball as Rittman notched an unassisted goal to extend the lead to 2-0. Baker tallied a caused turnover and dished out a pair of assists to extend the lead to 4-0 midway through the first quarter. Yates tallied a save before Hadac added two ground balls and a caused turnover to keep the Braves scoreless. Rask added two of UC's next three goals as the Patriots took a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
Ottawa struck first in the second quarter, however, the Patriots responded with three goals in less than a minute to extend the lead to 10-2. Cumberlands defense held Ottawa at bay for the remainder of the quarter, while UC's offense added a trio of goals, including one Rask in the closing seconds of the period to make it a 13-2 advantage.
Hadac forced a turnover to begin a transition that led to a Terpstra goal to open the third quarter. UC's pressure tallied three caused turnovers as Terpstra connected with Helsten for a goal to extend the lead to 16-2 with 4:44 left in the third.
Mia Bosah made a consecutive saves and started a transition as Rittman took the ball coast-to-coast for the goal before finding Tate for a goal in the closing seconds on the period to make it 18-2.
The Patriots added four goals in the final period as Terpstra and Helsten tallied a goal and an assist each in the period for the 22-2 final.
Cumberlands defense limited Ottawa to 11-26 on clears in the game and outshot the Braves 28-12.
UC will return to the field Wednesday, April 3, when they host Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
