Georgetown, KY – The second-ranked Patriots had five different players tally five points as Cumberlands defeated Georgetown 18-8 Wednesday night. With the victory, the Patriots close out the regular season with a 17-1 record and 5-1 against the MSC.
Anna Lobbezoo and
Marisa Helsten led the way with four goals and an assist each, while Lobbezzo also scooped four draw controls.
Aleyah Belton,
Morgan Tate, and
Ashlee Baker notched five points apiece in the win.
Koral Hadac recorded nine draw controls and eight ground balls, while Belton tallied a team best five caused turnovers.
Mia Bosah and
Hannah Yates combined for six saves in the game.
Both defenses came out strong to open the game forcing turnovers over the first ten minutes of play.
Ashlee Baker put the Patriots on the board early with an unassisted goal at the 5:15 mark.
Aleyah Belton won the draw control and on that possession, Baker found
Morgan Tate cutting for a goal. That goal was Tate's 100
th career point. Belton quickly added a free position goal to extend the lead to 3-0 with 3:30 remaining. The Patriots forced a turnover, while
Mia Bosah tallied a save as Cumberlands took the 3-0 lead into the second quarter.
Baker connected with
Marisa Helsten, two minutes into the second quarter as UC extended their lead to 4-1. Cumberlands utilized strong defense as
Mia Rask forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Belton found Helsten for a goal giving Cumberlands the 5-1 edge with 6:10 remaining. Baker dished out an assist to
Anna Lobbezoo before netting a goal of her own to make it 7-1. The Tigers added a late goal as the Patriots took a 7-2 lead into half.
Hadac scooped the opening draw of the third quarter before Belton scored 15 seconds in to make it 8-2. Two minutes later, Helsten forced a turnover and scooped the ground ball before connecting with
Mia Rask for a goal, before adding one her own as UC took a 10-2 lead with 11:15 left. UC continued to apply pressure as
Morgan Terpstra found Helsten for a one-timer to make it 11-2 with 5:16 remaining. The Tigers scored three unanswered to cut the lead to 11-5 after three quarters.
Morgan Tate dished out assists to both Belton and Rask to put UC in front 13-5 with 13:44 left in the fourth quarter. A minute later, Hadac scooped a ground ball and on the ensuing possession Lobbezoo converted a free position goal to give UC the 14-5 advantage. Georgetown scored twice before Lobbezoo led the Patriots response with a goal and an assist to make it 16-7 with 5:59 left. Lobbezoo and Tate each added a late goal for the 18-8 final.
The Patriots earned the second-seed for the AAC tournament and a first round bye. Cumberlands will face the winner of the 3-6 matchup on Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m. at the UC Lacrosse Complex.
