Patriots Utilize Strong First Quarter to Advance to AAC Semifinals

Williamsburg, KY – The fourth-ranked Patriots men's lacrosse team netted eight first quarter goals en route to a 21-6 win over eighth-ranked SCAD in the quarterfinals of the AAC Tournament Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex.  With the win, UC advances to the semifinals of the AAC tournament and improves to 13-3 overall.

Dom Lulow netted a career-high six goals and finished with eight points in the game. Maalek Wilson dished out four assists and notched six points, while Will Rogers and Nick Kava finished with five points apiece.  Michael Toohey made 14 saves in the win as Nathan Foskey added three saves.  Chrystian Coleman notched three caused turnovers, while Rogers, Gabe Schwaiger, and Michael Adams each scooped four ground balls.

Toohey opened the game with consecutive saves and on the Patriots first offensive possession Wilson put a well-placed shot into the cage to make it 1-0.  The two teams traded goals before Carter Barrett and Lulow scored back-to-back goals to make it a 4-1 lead with 5:57 remaining.  UC added four unanswered goals in the final three minutes of the quarter, including Rogers connecting with Lulow for a goal as time expired extending the lead to 8-1.

Cumberlands defense started the second quarter strong as Coleman forced a turnover, while Toohey added a save to keep the score 8-1.  Three minutes into the period Kava found Barton for a goal to extend the lead to 9-1.  Toohey added a pair of saves while the teams traded goals before Wilson added his second of the game giving Cumberlands the 11-2 advantage.  The Bees scored twice in the closing minutes cutting the lead to 11-4 at the break.

UC came out strong in the third quarter outscoring SCAD 6-0 in the quarter, while Toohey added five saves.  Kava got the scoring started in the period before Coleman netted his first goal making it 13-4 with 10:29 remaining.  All three of the Patriots starting attack added unassisted goals before Coleman intercepted a pass and took it coast-ot-coast for a goal extending the lead to 17-4. 

Lulow tallied an assist and a goal to open the fourth quarter giving Cumberlands the 19-4 advantage.  Both teams added a pair of goals to close out the game, including one from Caleb Mason for the 21-6 final.

Cumberlands out shot the Bees 52-33 in the game.

UC advances to the semifinals of the AAC Tournament, where they will face top-ranked Reinhardt.  The game is scheduled for Friday, April 26, at 1 p.m. in Marietta, GA.
