Patriots Fall in Overtime to Eagles

Marietta, GA – Will Rogers netted the game-tying goal with 1:35 remaining in the fourth quarter, however, the fourth-seed Patriots come up short against 7-6 in overtime against top-seed Reinhardt, Friday afternoon.  Cumberlands moves to 13-4 on the season.

Michael Toohey led the way for UC tying her season-high 18 saves to go along with two caused turnovers and a pair of caused turnovers.  Will Rogers notched two goals and two assists to lead the offense, while Evan Barton tallied a pair of goals.  Dom Lulow notched two points and four ground balls.

Cumberlands jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Rogers connected with Lulow for a man-up goal 25 seconds into the contest.  Reinhardt scored twice over the next four minutes to take the lead, before made a pair of saves.  The Patriots evened the score at the 4:23 mark as Lulow found Barton cutting in front of the cage for the equalizer.  In the closing minute of the period Nick Kava forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Taylor Long netted his first goal of the season to put UC in front 3-2.

Both teams came out with strong defensive efforts in the second quarter as both teams were held scoreless for the first half of the period.  Toohey added a save at the 5:48 mark before Maalek Wilson connected with Rogers for the goal to extend the lead to 4-2.  UC took a 4-3 lead into the break. 

Reinhardt scored a pair of goals in the third period as Toohey notched six saves in the period, however, the Eagles to a 5-4 lead.

UC evened the score on their first offensive possession of the fourth quarter as Rogers found Barton for a man-up goal.  Cumberlands couldn't retake the lead before Reinhardt added a man-goal to retake the lead 6-5 with 6:39 remaining.  Toohey added a save before Wilson notched a caused turnover to give the Patriots possession with 1:56 remaining. UC tied it 20 seconds later as Rogers netted an unassisted goal to even the game at 6-6.  Toohey made a save in the closing seconds to send the game to overtime.

Cumberlands won the opening faceoff of overtime, however, couldn't convert their shot.  Toohey made his 18th save of  the game, before Brady Hanak scooped the loose ball and scored the game-winning goal for Reinhardt for the 7-6 final.

The Patriots will now await the NAIA selection show on Sunday to see the teams that qualify for the NAIA Invitational that takes place May 8-11 in Savannah, GA.
