Georgetown, KY – The third ranked Patriots (42-6, 15-1) battle from behind to take game one of the Mid-South Conference series, 3-1, over Georgetown (RV) (28-19, 9-7). Charlie Muñiz and
Chipper Korbacher walked away with record-breaking games in their respective positions, on Friday afternoon at Robert N. Wilson Field.
UC's hitters compiled seven hits, with two doubles, a triple, and a home run. The pitching staff held the Tigers to four hits and struck out 10 batters.
Starting on the mound,
Knicko Billings went five innings with five strikeouts to secure his seventh win.
Cooper Morgan entered in relief, throwing three complete innings with three strikeouts.
Chipper Korbacher closed the game and broke the Patriot single-season saves record after throwing his eleventh save, with two strikeouts to defend UC's lead.
At the plate, Charlie Muñiz batted 2-for-4, collecting his 30
th home run of the season to break the Cumberlands single-season home run record. The junior recorded two RBIs. The first baseman,
Max Harper, went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.
The Tigers were first on the board, taking a 1-0 lead off an RBI double, in the bottom of the fourth.
In the top of the sixth inning, Cumberlands shifted into the lead, 2-1. To lead off,
Caden Petrey doubled down the left line and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from
Christian Thompson. Charlie Muñiz, who was substituted for pinch runner
Jay Flynn, sent Petrey across the plate, after marking an RBI single up the middle.
Evan St. Claire hit a fly out to left field, moving Flynn to third base.
Max Harper recorded his second triple of the season, plating another run.
After a scoreless inning, UC extended their lead to 3-1 when Charlie Muñiz hit his record-breaking homer, in the bottom of the eighth frame.
No. 3 Cumberlands will complete the Mid-South Conference series against Georgetown (RV) on Saturday, April 27
th. The twin bill will begin with game two at 1 p.m. and game three at 3 p.m. in Georgetown, KY.
