Boelter Notches Second Hat Trick as Patriots Take Down #19 Knights

Williamsburg, KY – Jayden Boelter recorded her second hat trick of the season, while the Patriots defense held #19 Marian without a shot in the second half as top-ranked Cumberlands defeated the Knights 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 3-0 on the season, while Marian moves to 2-1.

The Hebron, KY native has now netted seven goals on the season, including a pair of game-winning goals.  Lucia Gomez and Maggie Johnson each tallied their first assist of the season, while Carola Fontan notched her second assist of the year. Cumberlands defense limited Marian to just five shots in the contest all of which came in the first half.

Both teams came out aggressive in the first ten minutes of play as Fontan recorded a pair of shots, which went keeping the match scoreless.  In the 15' Laura Bosca brought the ball down the right flank and crossed it into the box where it was deflected off a Knight's player into the goal to make it a 1-0 lead for UC.  Marian responded quickly as Layla Brown got behind the Pats backline and netted an unassisted goal 31 seconds later to even the score.  The Knights looked to take the lead minutes later, however, Olaya Blanco notched a team save to prevent the goal.  Marian notched three corner kicks, while Katie Koger put a shot on frame, which was saved by Martell to keep the score tied heading into the break.

UC came out strong in the second half as Bosca took a pair of shots in the first five minutes of the period.  The Patriots added a pair of shots from Nicole Araujo along with a corner kick as Cumberlands continued to control the possession.  Boelter broke the tie in the 53' as Gomez sent a line drive into the box, which deflected off a Marian player before Boelter headed it into the back of the net.  The Patriots continued to control the possession rattling off four shots and four corner kicks before Fontan put a cross right to Boelter in the box for the finish extending the lead to 3-1 in the 75'.  Cumberlands final goal came in the 89' as Johnson sent a cross from the right flank into the box, where Boelter headed inside the near post to complete the hat trick and secure the 4-1 final.

Cumberlands returns to the pitch Wednesday, August 28th, when they host Milligan.  The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. with live video available here.
