Top-Ranked Patriots Net Three Unanswered Goals to Win Top-10 Battle

Williamsburg, KY – In a matchup that featured two top-ten teams, it was the top-ranked Patriots that scored three unanswered goals en route to the 3-1 win over #7 Spring Arbor Tuesday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex.  The win improves Cumberlands to 6-0 on the season, while the Cougars move to 3-2 on the year.

Jayden Boelter tallied her fourth multi-goal season, while Nicole Araujo netted her first goal of the season.  Carola Fontan and Olaya Blanco each dished out an assist in the match, while Georgia Martell  made three saves in the victory.

Spring Arbor came out controlling the possession with four shots in the first nine minutes of play, one of which was saved by Martell to keep the game scoreless.  Cumberlands answered controlling the possession for the next several minutes, putting two shots on frame but couldn't convert.  The match remained scoreless until the 16' when Kayla Baar found Lauren Marshall for a goal to put the Cougars in front 1-0. Cumberlands responded quickly as Boelter won the possession off a Spring Arbor goal kick, beat one defender before putting a well-placed shot into the upper right corner of the net to even the score at 1-1. Two minutes later, Fontan played a threw ball up field to Araujo, who took one dribble before sending her shot just inside the far post to make it 2-1 in the 20'.  The Pats looked to extend their lead however couldn't convert as UC took the 2-1 edge into half.

The Cougars looked for the equalizer early into the second half but was thwarted a Martell made a full extension diving save to her right to keep UC in front.  Araujo and Laura Bosca each put a shot on frame, over the next 10 minutes of action.  In the 63' Olaya Blanco sent a well-placed corner kick into the box finding Boelter who headed it into the net to give Cumberlands the 3-1 lead.  Minutes later Boelter was fouled in the box, setting up a penalty kick that deflected off the crossbar keeping the score 3-1.  Both teams notched two shots over the final 20 minutes as the Patriots earned the 3-1 final.

This marks UC's fourth win over a team ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll this season.

The Patriots return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 18th when they host Shawnee State.  That match is slated for 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
