Lawrenceville, GA - A late offensive burst in the second half helped propel the #12 Patriots to a 4-2 victory over #21 Georgia Gwinnett College. After trailing 2-1 at the half, three goals off the boot of Nicolas Caicedo and the brace from Salvador Martinez helped elevate UC past GGC.
Collectively, UC tallied 11 shots with ten being on frame. Martinez led the way with two goals, two shots and two being on frame. Caicedo followed with his first collegiate goal while Bart Jan-Braams tallied his first goal of the season.
The Patriots started out strong offensively, seeing back-to-back corner shots from Emil Skursch. On Skursch's second corner kick, Gerard Liao headed the ball which was blocked before being recovered by Bart Jan-Braams to score the first goal in the 10' (1-0, UC).
In a short stint, the Grizzlies managed to record two goals to leave the Pats trailing 2-1 at the half.
At the start of the second half, Nicolas Caicedo recorded the equalizer off with a shot behind the back on a pass up field from Mario Fernandez Garcia (2-2).
UC continued to strike on offense, seeing a shot on frame from Shuma Sasaki in the 58'.
In the 62nd minute, Sasaki sent a laser across the box to Hugo Champalloux but was deflected by the Grizzlies goalie before Martinez struck the ball into the back of the net for a 3-2 Patriot lead.
GGC was relentless and had four consecutive shots, with one of them being on frame, but was unsuccessful courtesy of stellar defense from UC goalie Javier Inquired Cuervo.
With time dwindling down in the 81st minute, a double assist from Fernandez Garcia and Champalloux saw Martinez record the brace and seal the #12 Pats 4-2 victory against the #21 Grizzlies.
Cumberlands will return to the UC Soccer Complex in four days' time on Wednesday, September 18, to host Shawnee State University (OH). Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. (EST) in Williamsburg, KY.
