Cumberlands Falls Short to #10 IU Kokomo

Kokomo, IN – Cumberlands Volleyball (RV) (19-1) fell short to No. 10 IU Kokomo in, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) on Saturday morning at the IU Kokomo Invitational Tournament. The Pats tallied 22 kills, 21 assists, 35 digs, and four service aces.

Allyson Grava led in attacking, marking seven kills and two service aces. Savanah Jolly compiled 10 assists, while Kendall Arnold had nine. The libero, Juliet Banks, totaled 10 digs and Arnold earned seven.

In the first set, Sara Zampedri put the Pats on the board with a kill, but they trailed IU Kokomo, 3-1. The Cougars went on an eight-point run and Cumberlands responded with four points off two attacking errors and an ace served by Davey Slaughter paired with a Faith Franklin kill, 15-10. Grava marked a kill to trim the deficit to 18-12, but could not catch the Cougars, sealing the set at 25-15.

Augustyniak opened the second set with a kill and the score was quickly tied at 2-2. The Patriots trailed 10-4, until a Cougar attacking error split the score at 10-5. UC attempted to retaliate with kills from both Augustyniak and Grava in addition to an IU Kokomo error but were still behind 14-9. To make the score 19-12, Gipson notched a kill and Grava followed with a service ace. The Cougars finished the set on top, 25-15.

The Pats were down 5-3 at the beginning of the third set, but Arnold leveled the score at 5-5 with a service ace. The Cougars answered with five straight points to lead UC 12-6. Kills from Jolly and Gipson, along with an ace served by Grava lessened the gap to 19-14. A service error on IU Kokomo gave Cumberlands their final point of the match, but it was not enough to overcome the Cougars, 25-17.

UC (RV) will host Lindsey Wilson in a Mid-South Conference match on Tuesday, September 17th at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, KY.
