Barbourville, KY – In their second match up of the 2024 season
, Cumberlands Volleyball (RV) (20-3) fought hard to defeat Union Commonwealth (5-10) in five sets, 3-2. Across the match, multiple Patriots recorded new season-highs while UC tallied 71 kills, 67 assists, 69 digs, and five service aces
Allyson Grava paved the way, leading the team with a new season-high of 24 kills, while
Kara Gipson tied her career-high with 18 kills.
Kendall Arnold compiled a season-best of 42 assists and
Davey Slaughter notched her season-high 23 digs.
The Pats opened the first set down 7-3, taking their first points on kills by
Aleksandra Augustyniak and
Sara Zampedri, along with a Bulldog service error. A bad set on Union prompted a four-point run for UC, seeing kills from Augustyniak and Franklin with an attacking error, 15-12. With a pair of kills by Grava and Gipson, in addition to a service error on the Bulldogs, Cumberlands fought back to trail by one, 19-18. Gipson leveled the score at 21-21 with a kill, allowing a kill by Zampedri and Union's attacking error to shift UC in front, 24-23. Zampedri sealed the first set win at 25-23 after acing the Bulldogs.
Three kills from Grava, Augustyniak, and Gipson gave the Patriots a 2-1 lead to start the second set. Grava and
Alana Shiery helped extend UC's advantage to 9-7, but the Bulldogs came back to even the set at 11-11. A kill by Gipson and a bad Bulldog set shifted Cumberlands back into the lead at 13-11. The Pats extended their lead to 20-17 off two consecutive attacking errors on UCU and a pair of kills by Franklin and Grava, but the Bulldogs came back to win the set, 25-23.
Cumberlands led a powerful third set 6-2, seeing kills by Grava, Augustyniak, and a pair from Zampedri. A five-point run, with a trio of kills by Grava and two attacking errors on Union, put the Pats up 15-4. Grava and Gipson kept the momentum moving and extended the Patriot advantage 20-5, while the UC defense kept the Bulldogs from scoring. A Gipson kill and a bad set from the Bulldogs completed the set with a Pats win at 25-8.
In the fourth set, the Patriots started with a 7-3 lead, noting back-to-back kills from Gipson, a trio of kills by Zampedri, and one Franklin kill. Grava and Gipson pushed UC further into the lead, 13-6, with one kill each. The Bulldogs leveled the field at 15-15 and took the lead from that point, finishing the set at 25-21
A pair of Gipson kills, one kill from Grava, and an ace served by Shiery put the Pats in a 5-3 to open the fifth and final set. Cumberlands pushed forward, notching seven kills and a service ace by
Savanah Jolly to defeat Union, 15-7.
