Araujo Dished Out Career High Three Assists as Patriots Earn the 4-1 Victory

Williamsburg, KY – The top-ranked UC women's soccer team netted four first half goals to earn the 4-1 win over #15 Indiana Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the UC Soccer Complex.  With the win, Cumberlands improves to 5-0 on the year, while the Wildcats move to 3-2.

Nicole Araujo led the way for UC dishing out three assists, which is a career-high and her second multi-assist game of the season.   Sara Soto and Jayden Boelter each netted a goal, while Juana Fernandez and Abigail Little scored their first goal of the season in the win.  Georgia Martell made four saves in the win.

The Patriots struck early into the match as Olaya Blanco crossed the ball into the box where Soto was there to finish, giving UC a 1-0 lead 1:25 into the game.  Indiana Wesleyan responded putting a shot of frame in the 2', however, Martell was there for the save.  The Wildcats continued to apply pressure to the Pats back line earning five corner kicks, over a four minute span, the last of which resulted in a goal tying the match at 1-1.  UC responded quickly as the Pats worked the ball upfield, where Araujo centered into the box for Boelter to finish with her tenth goal of the season and put Cumberlands in front 2-1 in the 15'.

UC looked to extend their lead notching two shots on frame over the next ten minutes.  The score remained until the 40' when Araujo sent a cross into the box for Fernandez, who finished for the goal.  Just over two minutes later, Sarah Hammerstone started a Patriots run sending the ball forward to Araujo, who utilized one touch to push it forward to Little.  Little got behind the defense before putting a well-placed shot into the net to make it 4-1 in the 43'.  Martell made her second save in the closing seconds of the half as Cumberlands took the 4-1 advantage into the break.

Cumberlands looked to extend their lead early into the second half, tallying four shots in frame in the first five minutes, however, couldn't convert.  Indiana Wesleyan earned a trio of corner kicks and tallied five shots, but the Patriots backline held strong keeping the score 4-1 midway through the second half.  The two teams continued to trade possession over the final 15 minutes of play as the Patriots held on the 4-1 final.

UC outshot the Wildcats 16-12 in the match, while Indiana Wesleyan held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Patriots return to the pitch on Tuesday, September 10, when they host seventh-ranked Spring Arbor.  The match is set for 4:30 p.m. with live video available here.
