#3 Women's Wrestling Collects 12 Podium Finishes Led by Gomez First Place Finish at the Warrior Open

Fort Wayne, IN – The No. 3 Cumberlands Women's Wrestling team traveled to Indiana Tech University to compete in the Warrior Women's Open.

UC had 12 podium finishes, led by Katie Gomez who collected a first-place finish in the 124 bout. Placers include: Gomez, Ashley Courtney, Oriyana Castex, Shammilka Miranda, Kaylin Taylor, Presley Anderson, Mary Jane Porter, Destiny Marquez, Victoria Day, Karla Padilla, Angelina Casteneda, and Saiheron Preciado-Meza.

Leading the way for the Patriots, Gomez posted a 5-0 record on the day in the 124-weight class to claim a first-place finish. In her first bout of the day, Gomez marked a 12-2 tech fall against Addison Saporito (Ottawa) followed by a 10-0 tech fall against Sophie Sarver (Life). Gomez continued her success with a 10-0 tech fall against #14 Presley Anderson (UC Patriots) then moved on to face Anna Krejsa (Life) where she recorded a 10-0 tech fall. In the championship match, Gomez marked a 3-0 decision against #3 Joanna Vanderwood (William Penn) to go undefeated on the day and only allow two points against her.

Following Gomez, Ashley Courtney posted a 4-1 record on the day in the 110-weight class to claim a second-place finish. In her first bout of the day, she notched a fall in 1:31 against Leah Pekar (Tiffin) to move on and face Haley Williams (Rio Grande). Courtney recorded a 12-1 tech fall to then meet with Jackeline Shackleford (Manchester) and notch her second fall of the day in 0:40. In the semifinals, Courtney recorded her third fall of the day in 1:09 against Mackenzie Burger (Alma) to advance to the championship match. Courtney fell just short in her final bout of the day, seeing her claim the second-place title in the 110 bout.

Oriyana Castex was seen posting a 3-2 record on the day in the 138-weight class to claim a second-place finish in the Consolation A bracket. In her first bout of the day, she notched a 10-0 tech fall over Gracie Blake (Southern Virginia) and then had to face #1 Zaynah McBryde (Life). Castex put up a fight but was sent to the consolation bracket where she faced Athen Colderon (Siena Heights) and recorded a 10-0 tech fall. She then notched a fall in 2:50 against Kailey Rees (Providence) to advance to the championship bout in the consolation bracket. She fell just short of the mark, seeing her claim the second-place title.

Following Castex, Shammilka Miranda was seen posting a 4-1 record on the day in the 117-weight class to claim a fifth-place finish. Miranda opened the day with a 10-0 tech fall against Kayla Vail (Providence) followed by another 10-0 tech fall against Eden Hernandez (North Central). Miranda battled intensely but fell short in her third bout of the day, sending her to face #13 Irma Retano (Eastern Oregon). She notched a fall in 2:39 to advance to the bout for fifth place. Miranda went head-to-head with #15 Alicia Frank (Providence) and notched her second fall of the day in 3:49 to claim the fifth-place finish.

Kaylin Taylor was seen posting a 3-1 record on the day in the 117-weight class to claim a fifth-place finish. Taylor received a bye through the first round of bouts, seeing her face Minnie Locklear (St. Andrews) and notch a fall in 2:13. She then faced Tola Aluko (Purdue) and fell just short, sending her to meet Nadia Thomas (North Central) where she recorded a 14-4 tech fall victory. In the bout for fifth place, Taylor notched the fall in 1:01 against Alexis Hart-Butcher (Adrian) to claim the fifth-place title.

Behind Taylor, Presley Anderson was seen posting a 2-2 record on the day in the 124-weight class to claim a sixth-place finish. Anderson received a bye through the first round of bouts, seeing her match-up with #4 Katie Gomez (UC Patriots) and falling just short. Anderson moved on to face #5 Rose Kaplan (Indiana Tech) where she notched a 9-3 decision over her opponent. She fell just short in her final bout of the day against Talea Guntrum (Unattached) but still claimed a sixth-place finish.

In the 207-weight class, Destiny Marquez was seen posting a 3-3 record to claim a sixth-place finish. Marquez opened the day with a 6-2 decision over Jasmine Adiniwin (Providence) and fell just short against Aniya Herbin (Missouri Valley). In her third bout of the day, she marked a 12-2 tech fall against Aubrey Hunt (Siena Heights) followed by a 9-0 decision against Karla Padilla (UC Patriots). In her final bouts of the day, Marquez faced #11 Kena Leonard (Ottawa) and #9 Hayeni Costa. She work diligently and quickly, but fell just short and claimed the sixth-place finish.

Mary Jane Porter followed in the 131-weight class, where she was seen posting a 3-2 record on the day to claim a seventh-place finish. In her first bout of the day, she recorded a 13-0 tech fall against Trinity Davis (Lindsey Wilson) followed by notching a fall in 2:43 against #20 Jill High (York). Porter fell short in her next two bouts against #4 Paige Respicio (Providence) and #8 Olivia Messerly (Campbellsville). In the bout for seventh place, Porter faced #12 Tyler Swanigan (William Penn) and recorded an 8-2 decision to claim a seventh-place finish.

In the 207-weight class, Karla Padilla was seen posting a 2-2 record on the day to claim a seventh-place finish. Padilla fell short in her first bout of the day against #15 Taylor Rickley (Hastings) and then received a bye in her second bout of the day. In her third bout of the day, she notched a fall in 2:10 against Brianna Staebler (Campbellsville) to meet teammate, Destiny Marquez. She fell just short of the mark and was sent to the bout for seventh place. Padilla went head-to-head with Phoebe Burt (William Penn) and notched a fall in 2:00 to claim a seventh-place finish.

Angelina Casteneda was seen posting a 2-3 record on the day in the 103-weight class to claim an eighth-place finish. She was seen recording a 10-0 tech fall over Jordan Epstein (Huntingdon) and another 10-0 tech fall against #10 Isabella Bocanegra (Providence).

Rounding out for the Patriots, Saiheron Preciado-Meza was seen posting a 1-3 record on the day to claim an eighth-place finish in the 180-weight class. She was seen recording a 4-0 decision against #16 Jaclyn Daley (Baker).

Also competing for the Patriots was Bella Savage (110 bout), Asia Fowler (131 bout), Zoey Smith (131 bout), and Elena Guerena (145 bout).

The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday, February 1 in Des Moines, IA for the Grand View Open. Bouts are set to begin 9:00 a.m. (EST).
