Williamsburg, KY – After being a vital part of key wins for their respective teams, middle blocker Kara Gipson and defender Tjerk Meijs have been named the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, the athletic department announced Monday.
Kara Gipson earned athlete of the week honors after tallying 15 kills, a .750 attack %, to go along with seven blocks over two wins. The Bowling Green, KY native opened the week tallying 10 kills with a 1.000 hitting percentage in the 3-0 win over Bethel. Gipson followed that up with five kills and seven blocks as Cumberlands took down Freed-Hardeman. She notched three solo blocks along with four assisted blocks in the match. The seven blocks tied her season-high while also helping the Patriots improve to 20-0, which is now the longest win streak in program history.
Tjerk Meijs earned athlete of the week honors after an incredible performance in a top-10 matchup. In a battle against #2 Lindsey Wilson, Meijs impacted was felt throughout the pitch. The senior was a key part of the Patriots backline that held the Blue Raiders to just three shots in the first half. Playing man-down in the second half, Meijjs played a vital role in Cumberlands earning a shutout. In addition to his defensive efforts, Meijs scored the game-winning goal in the 79' minute as the Patriots earned the 1-0 win. It was Meijs first goal of the season and helped UC remain unbeaten in conference play.
