Williamsburg, KY – The #25 Patriots women's basketball team had five players in double figures, while UC recorded 28 steals and grabbed 21 offensive rebounds in a 114-64 win over Simmons, Friday night at on Randy Vernon Court.
Leading the way for UC was
Zaram Fredricks, who tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Newcomer
Jaydyn Carrico netted a team-high 20 points along with three steals, while
Joy Kendrick notched 18 points, five assists, and five steals.
Aden Clark chipped in 15 points and five steals, while
Peyton Mounce netted 11 points.
Cumberlands set the tone jumping out to a quick 14-0 run to open the season. On the first possession of the game,
Darcie Anderson tallied a steal and converted a three-point play. UC notched four straight steals that lead to four consecutive baskets as UC extended their lead to 12-0, just over a minute into the first quarter.
Zaram Fredricks added a putback to cap off their 14-0 run. A few minutes later,
Aden Clark connected with
Peyton Mounce for a three-pointer to extends Cumberlands lead to 19-4 with 6:16 remaining. KCU went on a 7-3 run, before
Mackenzie Babb found
Amy Thompson on the block for a layup to make it 24-11. Fredicks added a putback, off her fifth rebound of the game, as UC took a 28-15 lead after the opening quarter.
Mounce opened the second quarter with a strong take to the rim extended UC's lead to 30-15. UC utilized strong defense and smart ball movement as
Joy Kendrick and
Jaydyn Carrico combined for the next eight Patriots points extended the lead to 40-17 with 6:31 remaining. Midway through the second quarter, Mounce dove to the floor and started a transition with Clark finding Carrico for the finish. Thompson and
Emily Naranjo each notched a steal, which lead to Patriot points as Cumberlands took a 53-28 lead at halftime.
After a KCU bucket to open the third quarter, the Patriots responded with a 14-0 run of their own. Kendrick sparked the run with a three-pointer, while Clark also sank a three-pointer as part of that run. A few minutes later Clark sank a pull-up jumper to take a 69-33 lead with 4:07 remaining in the period. Kendrick connected with Clark for a three-pointer, before making a pair of steals which resulted in points, including a layup from
Alexia Wilson to make it 80-43.
The two teams traded baskets over the first few minutes of the fourth quarter until a Fredrick layup put UC in front 97-56. UC added back-to-back layups from Clark and Anderson as the Patriots surpassed the century mark for the second straight season. Fredricks added a pair of jumpers before
Noel Smith sank her first collegiate bucket making it a 107-58 lead. UC closed out on a 7-6 run for the 114-64 victory.
Cumberlands returns to the court Thursday, October 30
th, when they host (RV) Huntington as part of the Patriot Classic. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
