Three Patriots Earn Podium Finishes at Tiffin Women's Open

Tiffin, OH - The No. 3 UC Women's Wrestling team competed in their first open tournament of the season at the Tiffin Women's Open, where they saw three individual wrestlers mark podium finishes.  

Claiming top four finishes in their respective weight classes for UC was Genesis Gilmore (third place), Mary Jane Porter (third place), and Oriyana Castex (third place). Alivia Ming also notched a fifth-place finish in the 145-weight class.  

In the 145-weight class, Gilmore collected a third-place finish after posting a 7-1 record on the day. In her first match of the day, she faced Madesyn Wheaton (Alma) and used a five-point takedown, followed by a trio of two-point takedowns to mark an 11-0 tech fall. In her second round of the day, Gilmore went head-to-head with Hayden Newberg (Indiana Tech) and barely missed the mark in a 6-4 decision, sending her to the consolation bracket. In her third match of the day, she faced Abigail Miller (Tiffin University) and used five two-point takedowns to mark a 10-0 tech fall. She continued by marking a fall in 0:38 against Leighna Prater (Hiram College) and a fall in 1:24 against Jazmyne Lake (Rochester Christian). In her sixth match of the day, she faced Gennaveve Matt (Tiffin University) and marked a fall in 5:05. She went on to face her teammate, Alivia Ming (University of the Cumberlands), who she took in an 11-0 tech fall. To finish the day and secure her third-place finish, Gilmore faced Zionah Gardner (Adrian) and used five, two-point takedowns to mark a 10-0 tech fall.  

In the 138-weight class, Mary Jane Porter and Oriyana Castex collected a double forfeit third-place finish. 

Porter earned the third-place result after posting a 5-1 record on the day. In her first match, she faced Kristine Platt-Bakos (Trine) and used a four-point takedown, followed by a trio of two-point takedowns to mark a 10-0 tech fall. She then faced Alexis Kelley (Indiana Tech) and used five two-point takedowns to mark a 10-0 tech fall. In her third match, Porter went down to Brielle Bibla (Lindsey Wilson) in a 2:01 fall, sending her to the consolation bracket. She bounced back against her teammate, Brynn Brower (University of the Cumberlands), by using five, two-point takedowns for a 10-0 tech fall. She then marked a 1:48 fall against Nalml Rodrigiez (Unattached) and notched a 6-4 decision against Sophia Antonio (Tiffin University). She finished the day alongside Oriyana Castex (University of the Cumberlands) with a double forfeit for a third-place finish.  

Castex posted a 4-1 record after beginning the competition with a bye. In her first match, she marked a fall in 11:45 against Aleah Swilley (Rochester Christian). In her second match, she fell to Sophia Antonio (Tiffin University) in a 2:27 fall, sending her to the consolation bracket. She bounced back in her third match with a 12-2 tech fall against her teammate, Cara Brown (University of the Cumberlands). In her fourth match, Castex marked a fall in 2:19 against Annalls Ortex-Pierce (Rio Grande). She finished the day alongside Porter with a double forfeit for a third-place finish.  

The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday, November 8 at the Trojan Open in Mount Olive, NC.
