Mount Olive, NC – The No. 6 UC Women's Wrestling team competed in their second open tournament of the season at the Women's Trojan Open hosted by the University of Mount Olive, where they saw 12 individual wrestlers claim podium finishes.
Collecting first place finishes for UC was #13 Dutchess King, Sarina Gunn, Kaitlin Castro, Ruth Jimenez, and #4 Saiheron Preciado-Meza. #17 Destiny Marquez and #6 Naomi Duenas also claimed co-champions of the 207-weight class. Claiming top four finishes in their respective weight classes for UC was Elise Toste (2nd), Amaria Ridgner (2nd), Presley Anderson (3rd), Micah Miller (3rd), and Kaylin Taylor (4th). In the 103-weight class, King collected a first-place finish after posting a 3-0 record on the day. In her first match of the day, King faced Mia Pardo (Unattached). King worked quick with a pair of two-point takedowns in the first period, before marking the fall in 1:35. King advanced on to face Aspen Cook (Mount Olive), where she notched five two-point takedowns for a 10-0 tech fall. In the championship, King faced Alliya Walker (Unattached). King was agressive in the first period, marking two four-point takedowns and a five-point takedown for a 13-0 tech fall.
In the 117-weight class, Gunn earned a first-place finish after posting a 3-0 record on the day. In her first match, Gunn received a bye through the first match, then began her day with a matchup against Rebekkah Kinkade (Allen). Gunn opened the match with three two-point takedowns and a four-point takedown for a 10-0 tech fall. In the semifinals, Gunn faced Veronika Wilson (Unattached), who she quickly defeated in another 10-0 tech fall with two two-point takedowns, a four-point takedown, and finished the job with a final two-point takedown. In her final match, Gunn faced her teammate Sophie Sarver (University of the Cumberlands), who she narrowly defeated by notching the fall in 2:23 to claim her first place finish.
In the 124-weight class, Castro collected a first-place finish after posting a 3-0 record on the day. In the 145-weight class, Jimenez collected a first-place finish after posting a RECORD on the day. In her first match, Castro recieved a bye. She then opened her day against Rihanna Loomia (Allen), where she posted a four-point and two-point takedown before marking the fall in 0:48. Castro carried the momentum into her match against teammate Presley Anderson (University of the Cumberlands). In the first period, Anderson used a two-point takedown to take a 2-0 lead over Castro, who quickly recovered with her own two-point takedown. In the second period, the pair both marked two two-point takedowns, while Castro was able to notch two one-point takedowns that saw her collect the 8-6 decision and advance to the finals. In her final match, Castro paired up against Skylar Schaeffer, where she used seven two-point takedowns to secure the 14-6 decision and claimed the first-place victory.
In the 180-weight class, Preciado-Meza earned a first-place finish after posting a 3-0 record on the day. In her first match, Preciado-Meza went head-to-head with Jayden Holmes (Allen) and marked a two- and four-point takedown before nothing the fall in 1:38. Preciado-Meza then faced Noella Hipolito (unattached), where she posted two two-point takedowns before securing the victory with her second fall of the day in just 0:36. In her championship match, Preciado-Meza opened the first period with five two-point falls for a 10-0 lead against Morgan Thomas (Unattached), before securing the fall in 3:00 for her first place finish.
Destiny Marquez and Naomi Duenas collected co-champions in the 207-weight class.
Marquez posted two wins on the day. Her first was a fall in 0:37 against Zaria Robinson (Mount Olive), followed by a 12-2 tech fall against Andrea Smith (Mount Olive). Duenas also collected two victories, first with a fall in 0:38 against Sophia Marshall (Mount Olive), followed by her second fall against Lianna Davis (Allen) in 0:54.
The Patriots will be back in action for their first dual meet of the season on Friday, November 15th at Campbellsville University. The meet is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. in Campbellsville, Kentucky.
