Indianapolis, IN – Marian has been a perennial top-five team in the NAIA and it was on display as they defeated #19 Cumberlands women's basketball team 79-46 Saturday. With the win, the Knights improve to 5-0, while the Patriots move to 6-1.
Peyton Mounce led the way with a career-high 16 points, while
Zaram Fredricks added six points and 12 rebounds.
Joy Kendrick chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
It was a defensive battle early in this contest creating havoc for both offenses.
Darcie Anderson connected with
Amy Thompson for a three-pointer to put Cumberlands in front 3-2, before
Jaydyn Carrico added a steal and layup extending the lead to 5-2 midway through the first quarter. Thompson added a layup before Marian went on a 17-3 run to take a 23-10 lead.
The Patriots struggled to get into an offensive rhythm as they converted 15.4% from the field in the quarter as the Knights extended their lead to 41-17 at half. Fredricks added four points and six rebounds in the third quarter as Marian took a 60-25 lead.
The two teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter until Anderson sank a pull-up jumper to cut the deficit to 65-29. Mounce added a three-pointer and converted a three-point play making it 69-38 with 4:04 remaining. UC went on a 7-4 run late in the quarter, however, Marian closed out the game for the 79-46 final.
Cumberlands returns home Wednesday, November 19
th, when they host #15 Oregon Tech. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
