Patriots Utilize Strong Third Quarter in Win over Brewton-Parker

Lakeland, FL – The #18 Cumberlands women's basketball team utilized a 12-point third quarter advantage to defeat Brewton-Parker 87-73 Monday afternoon at the Southeastern Classic.  With the win, UC improves to 12-1 on the season and extend their win streak to six straight.

Joy Kendrick led the way for the Patriots with 20 points, while Lakin Burke added 13 points and 12 rebounds.  Amy Thompson chipped in a season-high 14 points, while Aden Clark finished with 11 points and four assists. 

Cumberlands opened the game with five straight points from Kendrick, before Mackenzie Babb hit from long range making it an 8-1 game just over a minute into the contest.  The two teams traded baskets before Amy Thompson notched a putback and Babb connected with Burke on the block for a layup extending UC's lead to 14-7 midway through the quarter.  Brewton Parker closed out the quarter of a 13-5 run to take a 20-19 lead after the opening period.

Kendrick drained a three-pointer to open the second quarter, before Thompson added another putback giving UC a 24-22 edge with 7:36 remaining.  Kendrick converted a layup before connecting with Aden Clark for a pull-up jumper to extend the lead to 28-23.  Clark connected with Kendrick for a jumper giving UC a six-point advantage midway through the second quarter.  The two teams traded points over the next four minutes as the game was tied 39-39 at the break.

UC opened the third quarter with a three from Thompson putting the Patriots back in front.  That sparked a 10-3 Cumberlands run capped off with a jumper from Zaram Fredricks making it 49-42 with 6:21 left.  Babb and Kendrick each drained a three-pointer coupled with four straight points from Fredricks give UC a 63-51 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Patriots converted from the charity stripe to open the four quarter as the maintained a 12-point advantage midway through the period.  Two minutes later, Burke converted a three-point play extending UC lead to 80-65 with 2:59 remaining.  In the closing minutes of the game Carrico converted a transition layup, while Clark drained a three-pointer for the 87-73 final.
 
The Patriots return to the court Tuesday, December 16, when they face Tennessee Wesleyan kicking off day two of the Southeastern Classic.  Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. with live video available here.
