Zaram Fredricks etched her named into the program's record books as she grabbed 25 rebounds as the #18 Cumberlands women's basketball team defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 85-48 Tuesday afternoon at the Southeastern Classic. With the win, UC improves to 13-1 on the season and extend their win streak to seven straight.
Fredricks posted a career performance with 20 points to go along with 25 rebounds and three blocks. The Lagos, Nigeria native becomes the first Patriot player since 1986 with 25 rebounds in a game as she tied Allison Wilburn (1981) and Allison Smith (1986) for the program record.
Joy Kendrick added 19 points and six rebounds, while
Aden Clark chipped in 13 points.
Amy Thompson added ten points, while
Peyton Mounce notched four steals and five rebounds in the game.
Fredrick and Kendrick combined to score UC's first nine points of the game taking a 9-5 lead with 7:35 remaining. Thompson added a putback, which sparked a 6-0 run for Cumberlands extending the lead to 15-7 midway through the quarter. After hitting a trio of free throws,
Mackenzie Babb added a putback as UC took the 22-13 advantage.
Fredricks added two points and two rebounds to open the second period, while
Aden Clark notched a block to prevent a transition layup keeping Cumberlands in front 26-16. UC added 15 unanswered points, including a pair of three's from Clark and three straight points from
Lakin Burke to take a 41-16 lead with 1:31 remaining in the half. Tennessee Wesleyan responded with six unanswered points cutting the lead to 41-22 at the break as Fredricks notched 14 rebounds and 12 points in the first half.
Cumberlands opened the third quarter going back to Fredricks on the block for a pair of jumpers pushing the lead to 45-24.
Jaydyn Carrico added a steal and in the transition Clark sank a pull-up jumper. The two teams traded baskets over the next few minutes until Kendrick connected for five straight points giving UC a 54-31 lead midway through the quarter. A minute later,
Emily Naranjo converted a three-point play off an assist from Burke extending the lead to 57-34. Burke and Fredricks closed out the quarter with layups making it 65-36.
The Patriots continued their strong play in the fourth quarter led by Fredricks, who grabbed two boards, hit a bucket, and connected with Thompson for a layup giving UC the 70-43 lead. The Pats went on an 8-2 run, capped off with a steal and layup from
Darcie Anderson to push the lead to 78-45 midway through the fourth quarter. Fredricks added six rebounds, a block, and a putback over the next four minutes as she tied the program record.
Alexia Wilson closed out the game with a layup for the 85-48 final.
The Patriots will close out the 2025 portion of their schedule on Tuesday, December 30, when they return home to face Union Commonwealth. Tip-off for that game is set for 5 p.m.
