Fort Wayne, IN – The third-ranked Patriots women's lacrosse team netted seven unanswered goals to open the game en route to an 18-11 win over eighth-ranked Indiana Tech Friday night. With the win, UC improves to 5-0 on the season, while the Warriors move to 1-2 overall.
Marisa Helsten led the way for Cumberlands with four goals and six points.
Florence Andrieu dished out a season-high four assists, while
Aleyah Belton notched four points.
Anna Lobbezoo and
Morgan Tate each tallied a hat trick.
Emma Rittman scooped a season-high 15 draw controls to go along with two goals, while
Koral Hadac tallied five caused turnovers and eight ground balls.
Mia Bosah made eight saves in the win.
Ashlee Baker forced a turnover a minute into the game and on the ensuing possession
Florence Andrieu connected with
Morgan Tate for a man-down goal. A couple minutes later,
Koral Hadac forced a turnover and ran a give-and-go with Andrieu for Hadac's first goal of the season. The Patriots tacked on another goal, while
Mia Bosah notched a pair of saves to keep UC in front 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Cumberlands added goals from
Aleyah Belton and Tate to make it 5-0 with 3:37 remaining. UC's defense continued to step up as the Patriots took a 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
Bosah made a save as Hadac scooped a pair of ground balls, while Cumberlands added goals from Belton and Tate to make it 7-0 with 10:50 remaining. Indiana Tech netted a pair of goals before the Pats responded with goals from
Anna Lobbezoo and Baker to extend the lead to 9-2. The Warriors scored four unanswered goals before Baker dodged and added a goal in the closing seconds of the half to make it 11-6.
Emma Rittman won the opening draw control of the third quarter and netted an unassisted goal 10 seconds later to give UC the 12-6 lead. A few minutes later, Rittman caused a turnover and Hadac scooped the ground ball. On the ensuing possession
Marisa Helsten dodged and put a well-placed shot into the cage making it 13-7. Indiana Tech scored two of the next three goals, however, Cumberlands took a 14-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bosah saved a Warriors free position goal, while
Reese Kincaid intercepted a pair of passes to notch caused turnovers to open the fourth quarter. With 7:19 remaining, Rittman goes lower corner of the cage to score and extend the lead to 15-10. UC added a goal before Andrieu tallied a caused turnover, ground ball, and connected with Helsten for the goal to give the Patriots the 17-10 advantage. The two teams traded goals in the closing minutes of the game for the 18-11 final.
The Patriots return to the field Sunday, March 2
nd, when they travel to Indianapolis, IN to face (RV) Marian. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
