Williamsburg, KY - In a game that featured multiple scoring runs by both teams, it was a six goal third quarter run by the second-ranked Patriots that earned them an 18-15 win over #4 Lawrence Tech Monday night at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win, UC improves to 7-1 overall, while the Blue Devils move to 2-3.
Marisa Helsten led the way for Cumberlands with five goals and six points in the win.
Florence Andrieu netted a hat tricks, while
Aleyah Belton notched five points. Three other Patriots players tallied two goals apiece.
Emma Rittman,
Anna Lobbezoo, and
Koral Hadac combined for 23 of UC's 27 draw controls in the game, while Hadac also added three caused turnovers and a trio of ground balls.
Mia Bosah made 12 saves in the win.
Rittman scooped three draw controls that led to a trio of goals for the Patriots in the first minute of the game. UC added another draw control before Rittman put home a goal extending the lead to 4-0 with 12:58 remaining. After Lawrence Tech netted three goals, Andrieu notched a man-up goal to make it 5-3 with 3:57 remaining. Bosah tallied three saves as the Blue Devils evened the score at 5-5. In the closing seconds of the quarter Andrieu converted a free position giving UC the 6-5 edge.
A minutes into the second quart Belton connected with
Tess Lisy for a man-down goal to extend the lead to 7-5. Cumberlands tallied two of the next three goals before Rittman won a draw control and pushed the ball upfield where Lobbezoo found Helsten cutting for a goal to make it 11-6 with 8:36 remaining. Lawrence Tech added five unanswered goals to tie the game at 11-11 heading into halftime.
UC opened the second half with a pair of Hadac draw controls leading to back-to-back goals from heslten and Lobbezoo extending Cumberlands lead to 13-11. After a pair of free position goals from the Patriots, Helstend found a cutting
Morgan Tate to give UC a 16-11 advantage. Bosah added a pair of saves while Baker netted her second goal of the quarter to make it 17-11.
Both defenses picked up the pressure in the fourth quarter, however, Andrieu converted a man-down goal, while falling to give the Patriots an 18-11 lead. Bosah added a of saves and despite four straight Lawrence Tech goals, Cumberlands held on for the 18-11 final.
UC returns to the field Wednesday, March 12
th, when they host Tennessee Wesleyan in their AAC opener. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
