Williamsburg, KY – The No. 5 Patriots (17-5) fell to (RV) Johnson University (17-4), 9-4, on Wednesday at Doyle Buhl Stadium. The UC offense scored four runs on six hits, leaving five runners left on base. As a pitching staff, Cumberlands had nine pitchers see action, combining for four strikeouts.
Charlie Muniz went 2-for-3 at the plate, with a home run and a single.
Christian Thompson batted 2-for-4, notching a double and an RBI.
Caden Petrey hit 1-for-4 with a double.
Cooper Morgan got the start for UC, throwing 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and two earned runs allowed.
Ben Rohrbach replaced Morgan in the top of the third, allowing just one run on two hits.
Yannis Rembert (2-1) was credited with the loss. Rembert entered in relief in the top of the fourth and allowed two runs on two hits.
The Royals were first on the board with two runs in the top of the second.
UC got one back in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Alec Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk, followed by an
Edwin Martinez single to put two runners on with nobody out. After the first two outs of the inning were recorded,
Jaylen Jones scored on a wild pitch to put UC on the board.
In the top of the third, Johnson University added one more run, to lead 3-1. UC responded again in their next at-bat courtesy of a Charlie Muniz homer to make the score 3-2, his 11
th of the season.
Edwin Martinez tied the score at 3-3 after reaching first on a throwing error by the shortstop, scoring Andiarena and advancing to second.
Johnson University answered right back, plating three runs in the top of the fourth to lead 6-3.
After a scoreless fifth, the Royals widened the gap with another three-spot in the top of the sixth, making it a 9-3 ballgame.
The Patriots would tack on one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a
Christian Thompson RBI double down the right field line, finalizing the score at 9-4.
Cumberlands will begin Mid-South Conference play at home for a series against Georgetown. Game one is set for tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET, followed by a doubleheader on Friday March 14
th beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
