Williamsburg, KY – The fifth-ranked UC Baseball team (18-5) had seven home runs, including three from Charlie Muniz in a 13-2 run-rule win over Georgetown (4-15) in their Mid-South Conference Opener on Thursday. Cumberlands scored 13 runs on 19 hits while allowing just two runs on five hits.
Kailen Hamson (4-0) was dominant on the mound again for UC, picking up his fourth win of the season. The senior threw six innings, giving up just one run on four hits and striking out eight.
At the plate, Charlie Muniz went a perfect 4-for-4 with three home runs, one double, and 4 RBI's.
Pedro Vasquez also had a monster day at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and two RBI's.
Alec Gonzalez added three hits in four at-bats, notching a double and a triple.
The Patriots jumped out to an early lead in their first at-bat, scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first.
Christian Thompson hit a single through the right side to lead off the inning. Muniz then blasted a two-run home run to center field to put UC on the board. One batter later, Vasquez homered to right field to make in 3-0 in favor of the Pats.
After a scoreless second, Cumberlands added two more in the bottom of the third. Muniz recorded a lead off home run to center field once again for his second of the day. With one out, Vasquez singled to put a runner on, then scored on an
Edwin Martinez RBI double to right field, extending the lead to 5-0.
Georgetown scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, UC answered again courtesy of the long ball. Muniz stepped up to the plate and notched another leadoff home run to left field, his third of the game. One batter later, Vasquez showed off his power once again, going opposite field for his second homer of the game. Next at-bat, Gonzalez doubled to the right center gap to put himself into scoring position. Martinez followed with a single to center field to plate the third run of the inning, making it 8-1. First baseman,
Jose Valentin, added another run for UC with an RBI triple to center field, scoring Martinez to give the Pats a 9-1 lead.
The Patriots tacked on another four runs in the bottom of sixth inning to make it a 13-1 ballgame and reach the run-rule threshold. Leadoff batter,
Christian Thompson, joined the home run party with a solo shot to right field, his third of the season. Next at-bat, Muniz notched his fourth hit of the day with a double down the left field line, then was pinch ran for by
Ben Snapp.
Derick Andiarena put his name into the home run column with a two-run blast to left field.
Trent Prokes drove in the final run of the game for the Pats with a single through the right side, scoring Gonzalez who tripled a couple of batters before.
The Tigers brought in a run in the top of the seventh, finalizing the 13-2 score.
Cumberlands and Georgetown will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
