New Albany, IN – The ninth-ranked Patriots (21-6) fell 7-3 in a midweek contest at #14 Indiana University Southeast (20-6) on Wednesday afternoon. Cumberlands was out hit by the Grenadiers 9-8 and left four runners left on base. The pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts, allowing five earned runs in the contest.
Charlie Muniz went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run in the top of the ninth.
Derick Andiarena also notched a home run in a 1-for-4 game.
Pedro Vasquez batted 2-for-4 with two singles.
Stuart Tharle started on the mound and was credited with the loss. He threw 5.1 strong innings, striking out five while allowing just one run on two hits. Entering in relief,
Willis McCarter tallied a strikeout in just 0.2 innings of work.
Yannis Rembert and
Oliver Kerns both pitched one inning in relief, giving up just three hits.
After four scoreless frames to begin the game, the Grenadiers were first on the board plating a run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.
IU Southeast added a pair runs in their next at-bat to make it a 3-0 ballgame heading into the seventh.
The UC offense was able to score their first run of the game in the top of the seventh on a
Derick Andiarena solo home run down the left field line, his fifth of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Grenadiers responded in a big way with four runs on three hits to extend their lead to 7-1.
UC plated two runs in the top of the ninth to finalize the score at 7-3. Charlie Muniz hit a leadoff home run to left center, his 16
th of the season. With two outs,
Edwin Martinez singled up the middle to score Vasquez from second.
Cumberlands will return to the field Friday March 21
st as they head to Henderson, TN for their second Mid-South Conference series of the season.
