Williamsburg, KY – The #5 Patriots (14-2) completed the four-game sweep of Rochester Christian (1-5) with wins of 13-1 and 11-5 to move to 14-2 on the season. Across the twin bill, UC recorded 19 hits with six homeruns and 15 walks. The pitching staff allowed notched 18 strikeouts, allowing just six runs on 14 hits.
Game one: No. 5 Cumberlands Stomps Rochester Christian, 13-1
In the first game of the day,
Nolan Wilson (2-1) got the start in his first home game as a Patriot and picked up his second win of the season. The junior pitched six strong innings, allowing just zero runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
JD Price entered in relief in the final frame to record the final three outs and retired all three batters he faced.
At the plate,
Caden Petrey went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
Max Harper also batted 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Alec Gonzalez added a home run and 2 RBI as well.
After a three up, three down top of the first from Wilson, UC struck first on an RBI single from
Derick Andiarena. Thompson walked to begin the inning and Muniz reached on an error to put the first two batters on. Next at-bat, Andiarena singled to left to give UC an early 1-0 lead.
Max Harper drew a walk in his first at-bat to load the bases. Shortstop
Alec Gonzalez did his just as he hit an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Zamaurion Hatcher who came into pinch run for Muniz, and advancing Andiarena to third.
Ben Snapp followed with a sacrifice fly of his own to increase the lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Muniz recorded his 300
th career hit on an RBI single to left, scoring Petrey who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, making the score 4-0.
Rochester Christian scored their only run of the game on an error in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Patriots answered right away in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run from
Alec Gonzalez, his fourth of the season to put the Pats lead back up to four runs.
Max Harper recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tack on another run for UC and earn a 6-1 lead.
The Patriots bats came alive again with five runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Trent Prokes started with a single and stole second, then scored on a Petrey single through the left side. Couple of batters later, Andiarena walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Cumberlands then scored on a wild pitch to make it an 11-1 ballgame. Harper followed with a double down the left field line to plate two more and extend the lead to 11-1.
Caden Petrey delivered a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to score the final two runs of the game for UC.
Game two: No. 5 Cumberlands Defeats Rochester Christian, 11-5
Yannis Rembert (2-0) was the starting pitcher and threw five full innings. Rembert was credited with his second win of the season after allowing five runs with eight strikeouts. The junior gave up three runs in the first but settled in after that with just two runs the rest of the way.
Pedro Vasquez hit 3-for-4 to lead the way for UC, falling just short of the cycle with a home run, triple, and single. Charlie Muniz also notched three hits on four at-bats with a home run and two RBI.
Rochester Christian got out to an early lead in game two, plating three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Pats responded right back in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own to even the game at 3-3. Following a one-out single,
Derick Andiarena continued his hot weekend at the plate with a two-run homerun to left center, his third of the season. Cleanup hitter,
Max Harper, doubled to left center to put himself into scoring position.
Alec Gonzalez followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Harper.
In the bottom of the second inning, UC took the lead courtesy of the long ball.
Caden Petrey led things off with a solo shot to left field, his second of the day and sixth of the season. One batter later, Muniz made history with a solo home run to center field, tying the NAIA career home run record with 88. Later in the inning, Vasquez tripled down the left field line to make the score 6-3. The next batter, Gonzalez hit an identical shot down the left field line to score Vasquez, and the lead was 7-3.
After a scoreless third, Vasquez homered to left center to for three RBIs. Andiarena singled and Harper walked to put the first two batters on base. Vasquez stepped up to the plate and delivered to give the Pats a 10-3 lead.
The Warriors would not go away as they plated two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a 10-5 ballgame.
UC plated their final run of the game on a Muniz RBI single to right field, his second of the game.
Cumberlands will travel to Knoxville, TN on Tuesday, March 4
th to face Johnson University – Tennessee. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET.
