Lawrenceville, GA – The Patriots came up short this afternoon in their midweek game against the eighth ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies, moving to 32-7 on the season. UC tried to rally late but could not make it happen as they dropped the contest 1-0.
Lindsey Shope pitched a complete game, striking out four while giving up just four hits and one run for the loss.
Amber Gainer,
Emma McDonald, and
Jade Gainer had three at bats with one hit each.
A. Gainer started UC off with a single up with middle, then stole second to move into scoring position. However, the Pats could not advance her as she was stranded on second to end the inning. In the circle, Shope followed with a quick three and out to end the bottom of the first.
Neither team scored in the second as the Pats stranded another runner on second after a J. Gainer singled to center field and stole second. The top of the third saw UC record their third hit off a single from McDonald. Once again, the Patriots could not capitalize as the score remained 0-0 into the fourth.
GGC scored the first and only run of the game in the fourth inning. Shope responded by striking out a Grizzly batter with a runner on base to limit the damage and get out of the inning. After another scoreless inning, GGC threatened in the bottom of the sixth putting a runner on third. Shope responded getting the final batter of the inning to line out to
Carly Oliver who made an incredible diving catch to end the inning and save a run.
The Pats needed one run in the seventh to keep the game alive but came up just short as the game ended 1-0 in favor of Georgia Gwinnett.
UC will head to Tennessee Wesleyan on April 23rd for their final non-conference game of the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM ET in Athens, TN.
