Georgetown, KY – The Patriots opened their final MSC regular season series with a 4-2 win on the road at Georgetown College on Saturday.
Carly Oliver made history in the victory, hitting her 25
th career homerun to become the Pats all-time leader. With the win, Cumberlands are now 33-7 and 16-0 in MSC play.
Lindsey Shope pitched a complete game for her 17
th win of the year. She gave up just five hits, two runs, and struck out three batters. At the plate, Oliver and
Bailey Turnbow homered while
Amber Gainer and
Jules Johnson recorded two hits each.
The Pats scored early as A. Gainer drew a leadoff walk and stole second right after. Oliver then stepped up and put one over the left field fence for the new record, giving UC a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. The Tigers responded with one run in the bottom half, before Shope stranded a runner on first to get out of the inning with just one run allowed.
Marquila Howell singled in the second but could not come around to score. Shope then sat the Tigers down one, two, three in the bottom half to keep the one run advantage. After a scoreless third, the Tigers evened things up off an RBI single. Johnson got the Pats out of the inning after giving up one run, catching a runner stealing second.
Gainer earned her second hit of the game in the fifth but was stranded on first. Shope went back out to the circle and earned another three-up-three-down bottom half to keep the game tied at 2-2.
Turnbow then came up huge for the Pats in the sixth with a solo shot down the left field line to reclaim their lead. In the bottom half, Shope walked the first batter who then moved into scoring position after swiping second. Shope responded by striking the next batter out and getting a pir of groundouts to end the inning without giving up a run.
A pair of singles from A. Gainer and
Emma McDonald put runners on the corners for Oliver, who put the ball in play to score the speedy Gainer from third, giving UC the two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh.
After a Tigers single, Shope got a fly out to get the first out of the inning. She then walked the third batter of the inning as GC had runners on first and second. She then got back-to-back grounders to Oliver at second who forced both runners out at second base to win the game.
The Pats will look to conclude their regular season tomorrow with the final two games against Georgetown where they look to go undefeated in conference play for just the second time in program history.
