Milligan, TN – Nicole Araujo put a strong header just inside the far post to tally the game-winning goal as the eighth-ranked Cumberlands women's soccer team defeated Milligan 1-0, Tuesday night at Anglin Soccer Field. With the win, UC improves to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Buffaloes move to 1-1.
It marks just the second time her career that Araujo has netted a goal in three straight matches and it is her fifth career game-winning goal.
Carola Fontan tallied the assist on the goal, while
Morgan White made a pair of saves to earn the clean sheet. Overall, the Patriots outshot Milligan 26-4 in the match, and had an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks.
UC took control of the possession early in the match as
Wakana Ose and
Abigail Little each put a shot on frame in the first ten minutes of play. Milligan looked to take the lead in the 20', however, White made the save to keep the match scoreless. The Patriots notched seven shots and three corner kick over the final 15 minutes of the first half but couldn't convert has the game remained scoreless at the break.
Cumberlands continued to pepper the Buffaloes with strong shots to open the second half. In the 48',
Sara Soto's shot deflected off the post, however, Fontan took possession of the rebound and sent a high pass across the box, where Araujo headed into the net giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead. UC rattled off five more shots over the next ten minutes but the score remained 1-0. The Patriots continued to dominate the possession and the stat line for majority of the second half. Milligan looked for an equalizer in the closing minute of the match as Katelyn Penner's shot was saved by White to preserve the 1-0 final.
Cumberlands returns to the pitch on Saturday, August 30, when they travel to Spring Arbor, MI to face the tenth-ranked Cougars. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. with live video available
