Lima, OH – The University of the Cumberlands men's soccer team opened play at the UNOH Labor Day Classic on Saturday afternoon, playing to a 1-1 draw against RV Westcliff. The Patriots struck first in the opening half, while the Warriors leveled the match from the penalty spot in the second.
The first half saw both sides create chances early, with Mario Fernandez Garcia and Bruno Marques each firing shots in the opening minutes. Goalkeeper Javiero Izquierdo Cuervo was tested multiple times, coming up with saves on strong attempts by the Warriors to keep the match scoreless.
Cumberlands broke through in the 19th minute as Samuel Dolobaipu slid a pass into the box where Marques buried the finish for his first goal of the season, putting the Patriots ahead 1-0. UC nearly doubled the lead minutes later when Dolobaipu's shot sailed high before Vanja Kopunovic forced a save from the Westcliff keeper. Izquierdo stayed sharp between the posts, turning away three shots in the half to preserve the lead at the break.
The Warriors equalized in the 56th minute after being awarded a penalty. Di Lonardo converted from the spot to bring the score level at 1-1. From there, both teams pushed for the winner. Izquierdo made a diving stop on a header from Demitri Rodriguez Ro, while Olly Scott matched him with saves against Fernandez, Skursch, and Marques.
UC continued to press late, generating a series of corners and shots from Skursch, Fernandez, and Hugo Champalloux, but the Warriors defense held firm. Despite chances on both ends, neither side could find the decisive goal, ending the contest in a 1-1 draw.
The Patriots finished with 14 shots, including six on goal. Izquierdo tallied four saves in goal to preserve the result.
Cumberlands will return to action on Monday, September 1, when they close out the UNOH Labor Day Classic against #24 Governors State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Lima, OH.
