Athens, TN – The second ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team netted eight first quarter goals en route to a 15-11 win over (RV) Tennessee Wesleyan Friday afternoon. UC improves to 10-1 in season openers in their program history and have won eight consecutive season-openers.
Will Rogers led the way for UC with six goals, seven points, and five ground balls.
Dom Lulow added a goal and tied his career-high with four assists, while
Nathan Cook added three goals and two assists in his debut.
Dakota White went 14-21 on faceoffs, while
Ty Grooms scooped a career-high 12 ground balls in the victory.
Nathan Foskey made four saves in the win.
The Patriots jumped out to a quick start as
Nathan Foskey made a save on the opening possession. In the ensuing transition,
Dom Lulow found
Carter Barrett cutting towards the cage for a goal to make it 1-0. Foskey notched his second save before Lulow connected with
Will Rogers to make it 2-0.
Dakota White won the ensuing faceoff and took it upon himself to make it 3-0 with 9:50 left. UC notched a pair of turnovers, while adding three more goals, including one from
Dennis Smith to extend the lead to 6-0.
Nathan Cook netted his first collegiate goal and found Caden Abbot for a goal at the horn, giving the Patriots an 8-2 lead.
Cumberlands controlled the possession in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Rogers completed the hattrick with giving UC the 9-2 lead with 12:15 remaining. The Patriots defense limited the Bulldogs to just three shots in the second quarter, while Cook and Rogers each notched a goal making it an 11-2 lead at halftime.
Tennessee Wesleyan scored three unanswered goals in the third quarter cutting the lead to 11-5 with 5:08 remaining. Cook added a late goal in the period as Cumberlands took a 12-6 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs netted three of the first four goals in the fourth quarter cutting UC's advantage to 13-9 with 10:18 remaining. Cumberlands responded as
Caden Abbott forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession, Rogers put a well-placed shot into the net making it 14-9 with 5:07 left. Rogers added a sixth goal as the Patriots notched a 15-11 final.
Cumberlands returns to the field Saturday, February 21
st, when they travel to Grand Rapids, MI to face #8 Aquinas. The game is set for 2 p.m.
