Patriots Can't Fend Off Late Rally in Top-10 Matchup

Grand Rapids, MI – The second-ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team battled back-and-forth with eighth-ranked Aquinas Saturday afternoon but couldn't fend off a late charge falling 14-13 Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Saints improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Patriots move to 1-1.

Cumberlands was paced offensively by Will Rogers, who continued his strong start to the season with three goals, while Dom Lulow tallied two goals and two assists for a team-high four points.  Dakota White went 15-27 on faceoffs and scooped a team-high eight ground balls.  Nathan Foskey made 15 saves in the game.

The Patriots struck early as Nathan Cook netted an unassisted goal to give UC the early advantage.  After White won the next faceoff, Caden Abbott ripped a shot into the back of the cage making it 2-0, just over two minutes into the game.  The Saints scored three unanswered goals, before Kuwese Walker converted his first collegiate goal tying the score at 3-3 after the first quarter.

Aquinas scored three of the next four goals to take a 6-4 lead midway through the second quarter.  Cumberlands started to rally as Brody Gilreath netted an unassisted goal with 6:20 remaining.  White followed with a goal eight seconds later, after he won the faceoff tying the game at 6-6.  Foskey closed out the first half with seven saves as UC trailed 7-6 at the break.

Minutes into the third quarter Abbott found Lulow cutting towards the cage for a goal, while Rogers netted his first goal of the day to even the score at 8-8 with 11:43 remaining.  A few minutes later, Foskey notched a save and on the ensuing transition Carter Barrett ripped a laser into the cage giving the Patriots a 9-8 advantage.  Cumberlands continued their momentum as Lulow connected with Rogers twice while adding a goal himself to make it 12-8 with 2:21 remaining.

Aquinas outshot the Patriots 15-3 in the fourth quarter and despite Foskey making a trio of saves, the Saints netted the go-ahead goal with 5:19 remaining.  UC had a couple of chances but couldn't convert for the 13-12 final.

The Patriots return home Thursday, February 26, when they host #2 Madonna.  The game is slated for 4 p.m.
