Patriots Fall in Top-5 Matchup with Madonna

Williamsburg, KY  – The fifth-ranked Cumberlands men's lacrosse team struggled to get into a rhythm as they fell to second-ranked Madonna 21-6 Thursday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse Complex. With the win the Crusaders improved to 2-1, while the Patriots move to 1-2.

Nathan Cook paced the Patriots with two goals and an assist.  Kuwese Walker notched four caused turnovers in the game, while Johnny Simpson added a pair of caused turnovers and a goal.  Nathan Foskey and Jack Bichsel split time in goal and combined for 16 saves.

Foskey made a pair of saves in the opening minutes of the game keeping it scoreless.  After Madonna took an early lead, UC responded as Cook made a strong dodge and netted an unassisted goal tying the game at 1-1.  Cumberlands looked to take the lead, however the Crusaders forced turnovers and limited the Patriots opportunities as they took a 2-1 lead.

The Crusaders outscored the Patriots 19-5 over the final three quarters, including 14 second half goals, for the 21-6 final.  Sid Stewart netted his second goal of the season in the fourth quarter of the match.

The Patriots return to the field Saturday, March 7, when they travel to Mount Vernon Nazarene to face the Cougars.  It's the first meeting between these two schools and it is set to start at 12 p.m.
