Kante and Lawin Named Pepsi Athletes of the Week

Williamsburg, KY – After a dominating performance to help Cumberlands capture sweep the Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championships, MSC Athletes of the Year Abia Kante and Marke Lawin have been named the Pepsi Athletes of the Week, the athletic department announced Monday. 
 
Abia Kante was named the MSC Athlete of the Year after scoring in three events.  Kante opened the championship with a leap of 5.73m in the long jump to win the event.  That mark was also a NAIA "B" cut and was a season-best.  The junior captured her second conference title as she clocked a 58.11 to win the 400 meter dash by 0.13 seconds.   Kante capped off her performance reaching the finals of the 60m dash, where she sprinted to a 7.74 to place fourth.  That finished earned Kante five points as she closed out the championship with 25 points to earn Athlete of the Year honors.
 
Mark Lawin earned athlete of the week honors after posting a pair of conference titles.  Lawin opened by finishing atop the podium in the shot put.  The freshman saw his mark improve in each of his six attempts, closing out with a put of 14.48 to win the event by over a meter.  Lawin followed that up in the pole vault as he cleared 4.30m to secure the win.  He capped off his meet with a fifth place finish in the 60m hurdles crossing the line in 8.82.  Lawin finished the championship with 24 points to be named the MSC Athlete and Freshman of the Year.
