Detroit, MI – The #3 Cumberlands women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead as the Patriots earned the 13-2 win over #8 Lawrence Tech Saturday afternoon. With the win, UC improves to 11-0 in season openers in their program's history.
Ashlee Baker led the way for UC with a career-high six points to go along with seven points.
Emma Rittman chipped in five points, four caused turnovers, and seven ground balls. Newcomer
Lenora DeVries scooped a game-high eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers, both of which are the most in a Patriot debut.
Koral Hadac scooped five draw controls.
Mikayla Kimsey notched a career-high nine saves in the win.
The Patriots set the tone early jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Both teams made strong defensive stops to open the game, before UC took advantage of a Blue Devil penalty as
Ashlee Baker put a well-placed shot into the corner of the cage giving UC the 1-0 lead.
Emma Rittman and Baker added back-to-back goals, before
Lenora DeVries netted her first collegiate goal making it a 4-0 lead with 6:30 remaining. After
Mikayla Kimsey saved a free position shot, DeVries connected with
Kaitlyn Friel for her first collegiate goal. UC defense added a couple caused turnovers in the closing minutes of the period.
Cumberlands continued their stellar defensive effort as Baker forced a turnover and netted her third goal of the contest, off an assist from
Allison Joines to make it 6-0. A late goal from
Christina Carter extend UC's lead to 7-1 at the break, while the Pats defense limited Lawrence Tech to just three shots in the period.
The third quarter saw the two teams combined for eight shots, however, six combined saves from the goalies and 15 ground balls kept the score 7-1.
Baker and Rittman combined for UC's first four goals of the fourth quarter as the Patriots took an 11-2 advantage midway through the period. Baker added a pair of goals for a new career-high of six goals as the Patriots earned the 13-2 final. Cumberlands defense limited Lawrence Tech to just two shots in the quarter, while forcing seven turnovers.
Cumberlands returns to the field Tuesday, February 10
