Georgetown, KY – The #6 Patriots (20-5) opened the series with a dominant 10-0 shutout victory over Georgetown College (8-15) on Friday afternoon at Robert Wilson Field. Cumberlands scored 10 runs on 12 hits while allowing just three hits in the win.
Wesley Culley (5-0) continued his dominant stretch on the mound, tossing his third consecutive complete game. The graduate student threw all nine innings, allowing just three hits while striking out a season-high nine batters in the shutout victory.
At the plate,
Dariel Castillo led the way, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored.
Derick Andiarena finished 2-for-6 with four RBI, while
Ronald Almanzar added two hits and an RBI.
Pedro Vasquez also contributed with a double, an RBI, and two runs scored.
The Patriots wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first. Castillo walked to lead off the game and came around to score on an RBI single from Andiarena to give UC a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, Cumberlands broke things open in the third. Castillo reached base again and later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Johnboy Rittenhouse.
Caden Petrey followed with an RBI single, and Vasquez reached on an error to bring in another run, extending the lead to 4-0.
UC added another run in the fourth inning as Almanzar doubled home Castillo to make it 5-0.
The Patriots continued to apply pressure in the sixth. After
Clay Shelton walked and Castillo singled, Andiarena drove in another run with a base hit to push the advantage to 6-0.
Cumberlands tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Shelton before putting the game out of reach in the ninth. The Patriots scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI play from Andiarena to extend the lead to 10-0.
Meanwhile, Culley was in complete control throughout the contest, allowing just two baserunners through the first four innings and never allowing Georgetown to mount a serious threat.
Cumberlands and Georgetown will meet again tomorrow as the series continues for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m ET.
