Late Defensive Stand Lifts #2 Patriots Over #3 SCAD 10-9

Savannah, GA – Ashlee Baker netted five goals, while the Patriots defense used stellar play, including a big defensive stand in the final minute earning the 10-9 win over #3 SCAD Friday afternoon at the SCAD Athletic Complex.  With the win, UC improves to 11-1 on the season, while the Bees move to 5-2.

Baker led the way with six points, including five goals, while Allison Joines added two goals and an assist.  Anna Lobbezoo and Emma Rittman combined for five points, four ground balls, and four draw controls.  Mikayla Kimsey notched eight saves and four ground balls, while Koral added chipped in a pair of caused turnovers and a trio of ground balls.

SCAD struck first, however, Madison Rupp forced a turnover and on the ensuing possession Anna Lobbezoo connected with Ashlee Baker for a goal tying the game at 1-1 three minutes into the first period.  After a Bees goal, Emma Rittman won the draw control and found Allison Joines for a goal evening the score at 2-2.  SCAD netted two of the next three goals before Joines connected with Baker for a man-up goal tying the game at 4-4 after the opening period.

Mikayla Kimsey opened the second quarter with a save and on the ensuing possession Rittman found a cutting Baker for a goal giving UC a 5-4 lead.  The Patriots defense picked up their intensity tallying a trio of caused turnovers, while Kimsey added a save keeping the score 5-4 with six minutes remaining in the first half.  In the closing minute of the quarter, Kimsey notched a save and, on the transition, Lobbezoo found Baker for a goal extending the lead to 6-4 at half. 

Cumberlands continued their tenacious defense in the third quarter limiting the Bees to just two shots over the first seven minutes.  The Patriots extended their lead as Lobbezoo made a strong dodge and put a well-placed shot into the cage with 7:59 remaining.  Kimsey notched her fourth save of the game as the Pats defense continued their strong play.  With 1:45 remaining, Lenora DeVries found Baker for her fifth goal of the making it an 8-4 lead. 

On the first possession of the fourth quarter, Allison Joines netted a man-up goal extending UC's lead to 9-5.  SCAD got the lead to three before Carter won the draw control as Baker connected with Tess Lisy for a goal to make it 10-6 with 12:29 remaining.  That score remained until the five minute mark, when the Bees netted three straight goals to cut the lead to 10-9.  SCAD looked for the equalizer, however, Kimsey made a pair of saves, while the Patriots defense also blocked a shot for the 10-9 final. 
 
Cumberlands returns to the field Saturday, March 21st, when they travel to Cleveland, GA to face Truett McConnell in their AAC opener.  That game is set for 1 p.m.
