Williamsburg, KY – The fifteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands opened its Mid-South Conference series against #16 Lindsey Wilson University (Ky.) on Saturday afternoon at the UC Softball Complex, dropping both games of the doubleheader. The Patriots fell 4-3 in game one and 4-2 in game two, moving to 18-10 overall and 3-2 in MSC play.
Game 1: PATRIOTS FALL LATE AFTER EARLY LEAD
Cumberlands struck first in the opening inning when Alyssa Garcia singled home Grace Ross to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
Lindsey Wilson answered in the fourth on an RBI single, then took control in the fifth inning with three runs, all unearned, to move ahead 4-1.
The Patriots cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning when Grace Ross launched a two-run home run to left field, trimming the margin to 4-3.
Cumberlands was unable to add on from there as Lindsey Wilson held on for the one-run win. Ross led the Patriots offensively with a 2-for-3 performance, including the home run and two RBIs.
Game 2: BLUE RAIDERS CLIP PATS IN NARROW 4-2 VICTORY
Cumberlands again got on the board early in game two. Ross doubled to start the first inning, and Emily Delgado followed with an RBI double before Kristen Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. The Patriots added another run on a wild pitch to take a 2-1 lead.
Lindsey Wilson responded quickly with a two-run home run in the second to reclaim the lead at 3-2. The Blue Raiders added an insurance run in the sixth and held Cumberlands scoreless over the final two innings to complete the sweep of the day.
The Patriots had chances to rally late, putting multiple runners on base in the sixth, but could not break through. Delgado and Ross combined to keep Cumberlands within striking distance, but Lindsey Wilson's pitching staff closed out the game.
