Henderson, TN – The fifteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands opened its Mid-South Conference series with a 7-1 victory over RV Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) on Friday afternoon. The Patriots improve to 20-10 overall and 5-2 in conference play. 

PATS USE BALANCED ATTACK TO TAKE SERIES OPENER 

Cumberlands struck early in the first inning. After Alyssa Garcia reached on a walk and Kristen Smith singled, Jenna Fabela doubled to right center to drive in a pair of runs, giving the Patriots a 2-0 lead. 

The Patriots added on in the second as Grace Ross doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Garcia to extend the advantage to 3-0. 

Cumberlands broke the game open in the fifth inning. Garcia singled to start the rally before Smith delivered an RBI single. Ryann Livingston followed with an RBI base hit, and Aniyah White added another run-scoring single to push the lead to 6-0. 

The Patriots added one more in the sixth when Emily Delgado singled home Ross to make it 7-0. 

Freed-Hardeman got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single, but that would be all the offense they could muster. 

Jessica Cord earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on six hits and striking out six to improve to 13-6 on the season. 

Cumberlands totaled 11 hits in the contest, with Garcia, Smith, and Fabela each recording multi-hit performances.

Cumberlands will return to action tomorrow for the final two games of the series against Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.) at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM in Henderson, TN.
