Patriots Drop Pair to Freed-Hardeman

Henderson, TN – The fifteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Freed-Hardeman University (Tenn.), falling 6-1 in game one and 4-3 in the nightcap. The Patriots move to 20-12 overall and 5-4 in Mid-South Conference play. 

Game 1: THIRD-INNING SURGE LIFTS FHU 

Freed-Hardeman broke open a scoreless game in the third inning, using three hits to plate three runs and take a 3-0 lead. 

Cumberlands answered in the fifth when Jenna Fabela reached and later scored on an RBI double from Aniyah White to cut the deficit to 3-1. 

The Lions responded in the bottom half, adding two more runs on a pair of RBI hits and a defensive miscue to extend the lead to 5-1. 

Freed-Hardeman added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single to push the margin to 6-1. 

Cumberlands collected five hits in the contest, with White leading the offense with an RBI double, while Emily Delgado and Kristen Smith each added hits. 

Game 2: LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT 

Freed-Hardeman struck early in the first inning and added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. 

Cumberlands responded in the third as Aniyah White scored on a throwing error, cutting the deficit to 2-1. 

The Lions extended their lead in the fourth with two runs on back-to-back RBI hits to make it 4-1. 

The Patriots chipped away late, scoring in the fifth on an RBI single from Maleah Clinton and again in the sixth when Kristen Smith doubled home Alyssa Gent to cut the lead to 4-3. 

Cumberlands threatened in the final inning with the tying run on third, but was unable to bring her home as Freed-Hardeman held on to complete the sweep of the doubleheader. 

White led the Patriots with two hits, while Clinton added a multi-hit performance and an RBI in the loss. 

Up Next 

Cumberlands will return to action on the road as they travel to Georgia Gwinnett College for a three-game series beginning Friday at 3:00 PM and 5:30 PM, followed by a game Saturday at 1:00 PM in Lawrenceville, GA.
