Williamsburg, KY – The #8 Patriots (33-6) extended their winning streak to ten games with a doubleheader sweep over the University of Cincinnati-Clermont on Saturday afternoon at Doyle Buhl Stadium. Cumberlands took game one 11-1 before securing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in game two, outscoring the Cougars 17-2 on the day.
No. 8 Cumberlands Breaks Open Game One in 11-1 Win
The Patriots used a pair of big innings to cruise to an 11-1 victory in the opener.
Wesley Culley earned the win, improving to 6-1 after allowing just one run on two hits over five innings while striking out five.
Ben Rohrbach closed out the final two innings, striking out two.
Petrey led the offense with two home runs and four RBI, while Almanzar and Vasquez also went deep in the win.
Cumberlands broke through in the third inning.
Ronald Almanzar launched a two-run home run before
Justin Veloz added an RBI single.
Pedro Vasquez followed with a two-run homer to cap a five-run frame and give UC a 5-1 lead.
The Patriots added three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run from
Caden Petrey to extend the advantage to 8-1.
UC continued to add on in the fifth as
Zamaurion Hatcher and
Derick Andiarena each drove in runs, pushing the lead to 10-1.
Petrey capped the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth, his second of the game, securing the 11-1 run-rule victory.
No. 8 Cumberlands Uses Early Offense to Complete DH Sweep, 6-1
The Patriots carried that momentum into game two, using early offense and strong pitching to secure a 6-1 win.
Nolan Wilson earned the victory, improving to 6-0 after allowing one run over five innings while striking out six.
Jack Scrofano tossed two scoreless innings in relief to close out the game.
Cumberlands struck early in the first inning.
Jay Flynn led off with a solo home run, the first of his career, before
Johnboy Rittenhouse delivered a sacrifice fly and
Caden Petrey added an RBI single to give UC a 3-0 lead.
The Patriots added two more runs in the third inning as
Justin Veloz delivered a two-RBI single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Cincinnati-Clermont got on the board in the fifth inning, but UC answered in the bottom half as Petrey launched a solo home run to make it 6-1.
From there, the Patriot pitching staff shut the door, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out nine to secure the sweep.
Cumberlands and Cincinnati-Clermont will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. ET, with a Senior Day ceremony taking place between games at Doyle Buhl Stadium.
