No. 18 Cumberlands Sweeps Bethel to Close Series

Williamsburg, KY – The eighteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands closed out its series against Bethel University (Tenn.) with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at the UC Softball Complex, winning game one 8-0 before taking game two 9-2. The Patriots improve to 31-14 overall and 11-4 in Mid-South Conference play. 

Game 1: EARLY OFFENSE SETS THE TONE 

Cumberlands jumped on Bethel early in the opener, plating three runs in the first inning. Emily Delgado drove in the first run with a double before a wild pitch and an RBI double from Kristen Smith pushed the lead to 3-0. 

The Patriots added three more in the third inning as Smith delivered an RBI single and Jenna Fabela followed with a two-run double to extend the advantage to 6-0. 

Cumberlands continued to apply pressure in the fifth, adding two more runs on RBI singles from Maleah Clinton and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to make it 8-0. 

Jessica Cord was in control throughout, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits as the Patriots secured the run-rule victory. 

Game 2: ROSS POWERS PATS TO SERIES SWEEP 

Bethel struck first in game two, scoring two runs in the opening inning, but Cumberlands quickly answered. Delgado drove in a run in the first, and the Patriots tied the game in the third on aggressive baserunning from Maleah Clinton

Grace Ross delivered the turning point in the fifth inning, launching a two-run home run to give Cumberlands a 4-2 lead. 

The Patriots broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Fabela and Clinton each drove in runs before Ross capped the inning with a three-run home run to push the lead to 9-2. 

Ross finished with three hits and five RBIs, while Clinton recorded a three-hit game and scored three runs. 

Emily Delgado earned the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings, while Brenna Parker provided a strong start in the circle.

Cumberlands will return to action on Tuesday for Senior Day as they host Shawnee State University (Ohio) for a doubleheader at the UC Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM, with game two to follow at 3:00 PM in Williamsburg, KY.
