No. 18 Cumberlands Splits Doubleheader at Cumberland University

Lebanon, TN – The eighteenth-ranked University of the Cumberlands split its doubleheader against Cumberland University (Tenn.) on Thursday afternoon, falling 4-3 in eight innings in game one before rebounding with an 8-0 run-rule victory in game two. The Patriots move to 34-15 overall and 12-5 in Mid-South Conference play. 

Game 1: LATE HEROICS FALL SHORT IN EXTRAS 

Cumberlands found itself trailing early after Cumberland plated two runs in the third inning on a two-RBI single. 

The Patriots began to chip away in the fifth as Jae Jae Phillips stole home to cut the deficit to 2-1. Grace Ross then delivered in the sixth, launching a solo home run to even the score at 2-2. 

Cumberlands took the lead in the seventh when Alyssa Garcia reached on an error, allowing Aniyah White to score and give the Patriots a 3-2 advantage. 

Cumberland answered in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game, then used a walk-off single in the eighth inning to secure the 4-3 win. 

Ross led the offense with a home run, while the Patriots totaled six hits in the contest. 

Game 2: PATS RESPOND WITH RUN-RULE WIN 

Cumberlands responded in a big way in game two, taking control early. 

The Patriots struck in the first inning as Emily Delgado drove in a run, then added two more in the second behind RBI hits from Maleah Clinton and Alyssa Garcia

Cumberlands continued to build its lead in the third as Aniyah White and Jae Jae Phillips each drove in runs to extend the advantage to 5-0. 

The Patriots put the game away in the fourth inning with three more runs, highlighted by a two-RBI single from MaKenzie Henderson

Emily Delgado dominated in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out five as Cumberlands secured the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Cumberlands will conclude the series against Cumberland University (Tenn.) tomorrow with a single game scheduled for 1:00 PM in Lebanon, TN. 

Following the regular season finale, the Patriots will turn their attention to the Mid-South Conference Tournament, set for April 28 – May 2, hosted by the regular season champion.
